11 police officers suspended over assault on Swecchasebak Dal leader in Rangpur

11 policemen have been suspended on charges of negligence of professional duty and unprofessional behavior in the incident of beating of a leader of Swecchasebak Dal at the Kotwali police station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police. The investigation committee has recommended taking departmental action against them.

Rakibul Islam, member-secretary of the Rangpur Sadar Upazila Committee of the Swecchasebak Dal, went to the police station to participate in a family mediation session on the morning of June 3. He was beaten up inside the police station. Upon receiving the information, BNP leaders and activists rescued him and admitted him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Immediately after the incident, five policemen, including Kotwali Police Station OC Azad Rahman, were withdrawn elsewhere.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty said on Friday that 11 policemen were suspended on the basis of the report and recommendations of the investigation committee on Thursday afternoon. The investigation committee has submitted a report after reviewing all the documents, evidence and CCTV videos of the police station.

The suspended police members are: SI Masud Rana, SI Alam Badshah, SI Akhtarul Islam, ASI Monirul Islam, ASI Ariful Islam, ASI Meherun Nesa and Constable Mostaqur Rahman Khandaker, Constable Mokhlesur Rahman Mamun, Constable Rakib Ahmed, Constable Lima Soren and Constable Bhavna Rani.

Since the allegations are prima facie proven, they have been suspended temporarily as per Rule 880 of the PRB and Section 39(1) of the Government Services Act, 2018. The suspended members will be attached to the Police Lines and will receive food and other allowances as per the rules.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said that the department follows a 'zero tolerance' policy for any policeman's negligence in duty or illegal activities. In the future, such complaints will continue to be investigated properly and necessary action will be taken.
