12 Jamaat leaders held in different districts on charges of vote buying
At least 12 Jamaat leaders were detained with money in Saidpur, Cumilla, Shariatpur, Patuakhali, Sirajganj, Jamalpur, Narayanganj and various areas of Dhaka on charges of vote buying.
Thakurgaon district Jamaat Ameer Belal Uddin was detained with Tk74 lakh at Saidpur Airport in Nilphamari. He was later handed over to the police station. A worker was arrested with Tk7 lakh in a joint force operation in Shariatpur while a leader named Habibur Rahman Helali was arrested by the local people while distributing Tk2 lakh among voters in Muradnagar.
Four leaders and activists were held with Tk71,000 in Kamarkhand upazila of Sirajganj-2 constituency. The administration later released them. Jamaat claimed that the money was being used for central expenses.
Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Md. Habib was arrested in Sutrapur area of Dhaka-6 constituency on charges of distributing money among voters. A mobile court sentenced him to two days in prison.
A Jamaat leader named Kamal Hossain was detained while distributing money to voters in Mirzaganj of Patuakhali-1 constituency.
A worker was handed over to the police in Sonargaon of Narayanganj-3 constituency on charges of distributing money to voters. Three workers were detained by the people while distributing money on behalf of an independent candidate in Jamalpur-3 constituency; they were later handed over to the army.
Three people were held in Chandanaish of Chattogram on charges of illegally distributing money. Tk10 lakh and a Noah microbus were seized from there.
