A total of 1,260 metric tonnes of rice has been imported from India through Benapole Land Port in five separate consignments, marking the resumption of rice imports after a four-month hiatus.

Benapole Port Director Shamim Hossain confirmed the arrival, stating that the latest consignment—210 metric tonnes carried by six trucks—entered the port on Saturday night.

Previous shipments included 315 metric tonnes on August 21, 210 metric tonnes on August 24, 420 metric tonnes in two consignments on August 27, and 105 metric tonnes on August 28.

Customs officials are processing the clearance, with the entire quantity expected to be released by Sunday, according to port authorities.

Importers say the move is part of a government initiative to stabilize rice prices in the domestic market by increasing supply through imports.

Port officials have been instructed to expedite the clearance process to ensure timely distribution.

This is the first rice shipment through Benapole since April 15.
