1–3 low-pressure systems may form in Bay of Bengal this month

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast the formation of one to three low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal in September, warning that heavy rainfall triggered by the systems could cause short-term flooding in parts of the country.

Despite the potential for low-pressure systems, overall rainfall this month is expected to remain below normal, according to the monthly forecast issued after a meeting of the department’s expert committee on Tuesday (September 1).

The committee said the country could experience thunderstorms on three to five days in September. Heavy rain may also trigger temporary flooding in parts of the northern, northeastern and southeastern regions.

Day and night temperatures are likely to remain above normal throughout the month, increasing the possibility of two to three mild to moderate heatwaves in different parts of the country.

During a mild heatwave, maximum temperatures could rise to 36–37.9°C, while moderate heatwaves could push temperatures to 38–39.9°C, the department said.

The country’s major rivers are expected to maintain their normal flow for most of the month, with no significant disruption anticipated under the prevailing forecast.

Daily average evaporation is likely to range between 2.5mm and 4.5mm, while the average duration of bright sunshine could be between 4.5 and 6.5 hours a day, according to the forecast.
