In Gazipur district, the electoral contest between the Awami League and BNP has historically been almost equal. In past national elections (except the last three), this pattern has been evident. However, in the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election, the absence of the Awami League has changed the voting dynamics in Gazipur. This time, the main contest is expected to be primarily between BNP and Jamaat. Let’s take a look at the five parliamentary constituencies of Gazipur district.

Gazipur-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 194): Gazipur-1 comprises Kaliakair Upazila and Wards 1–18 of Gazipur City Corporation, including three police stations: Kaliakair, Konabari, and Kashimpur. Total voters: 720,939 (360,234 male, 360,693 female, 12 hijra).

Candidates: Eight candidates are contesting: Md. Mojibur Rahman of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md. Imarat Hossain Khan (Independent, motorcycle), S.M. Shafikul Islam of Jatiya Party (plough), Chowdhury Irad Ahmed Siddiqui of Bangladesh Labour Party (pineapple), Atikul Islam of Gono Front (fish), Taslima Akhter of Socialist Party (Marxist) (scissors), Md. Shah Alam Boksi of Jamaat-e-Islami (balance scale), Ruhul Amin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan).

Elected MPs:
1991 & June 1996: Rahmat Ali (Awami League), 2001 & 2008: Mozammel Haque (Awami League).

Gazipur-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 195):
Gazipur-2 comprises Wards 19–39 and 43–57 of Gazipur City Corporation, including Gazipur Cantonment. Total voters: 804,333 (400,402 male, 403,918 female, 13 hijra).

Candidates: Eleven candidates are contesting: Hanif Sarkar of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Md. Ziaul Kabir of Communist Party (hammer), Sarkar Taslima Afroz of Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh (apple), Masud Reza of Socialist Party (Marxist) (scissors), M. Monjurul Karim Roni of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md. Mahbub Alam of Jatiya Party (plough), Ali Nasher Khan of NCP (shapla), Jit Barua (Independent, football), Md. Abdul Qayyum of BASAD (moy) (hoe), Md. Shariful Islam of Jonotar Dal (pen), Atikul Islam of Gono Front (fish).

Elected MPs: 1991: M.A. Mannan (BNP), 1996 & 2001: Ahsanullah Master (Awami League), 2004 by-election & 2008: Zahid Ahsan Russell (Awami League).

Gazipur-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 196): Gazipur-3 comprises Sreepur Upazila and Mirzapur, Bhawalgar, and Pirujali Unions of Gazipur Sadar Upazila. Total voters: 527,360 (260,191 male, 267,162 female, 7 hijra).

Candidates: Seven candidates are contesting: S.M. Rafiqul Islam of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md. Nazim Uddin of Jatiya Party (plough), Ha: Ma: Mufti Shamim Ahmed of Islami Oikya Jote (minar), Muhammad Ehsanul Haq of Khelafat Majlish (rickshaw), Md. Ejadur Rahman Chowdhury (Independent, horse), Ashikul Islam Piyal of BASAD (moy) (hoe), Alamgir Hossain of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan).

Elected MPs: 1991: Asfar Hossain Molla (Awami League), June 1996: Akhtaruzzaman (Awami League), 2001: A.K.M. Fazlul Haq Milon (BNP), 2008: Rahmat Ali (Awami League).

Gazipur-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 197):
Gazipur-4 comprises Kapasia Upazila. Total voters: 330,977 (164,429 male, 166,548 female).

Candidates: Eight candidates are contesting: Shah Riazul Hannan of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md. Zakir Hossain of Jonotar Dal (butterfly), Md. Kazim Uddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Shafiullah (Independent, football), Monir Hossain of NPP (mango), Salah Uddin of Jamaat-e-Islami (balance scale), Enamul Kabir of Jatiya Party (plough), Manbendra Dev of Communist Party (hammer).

Elected MPs: 1991: A.S.M. Hannan Shah (BNP), June 1996: Afsar Uddin Ahmed (Awami League), 2001 & 2008: Sohel Taj (Awami League).

Gazipur-5 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 198):
Gazipur-5 comprises Kaliaganj Upazila, Boria Union of Gazipur Sadar, and Wards 40–42 of Gazipur City Corporation. Total voters: 354,643 (179,093 male, 175,548 female, 2 hijra).

Candidates: Six candidates are contesting: Md. Khairul Hasan of Jamaat-e-Islami (balance scale), Gazi Ataur Rahman of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), A.K.M. Fazlul Haq Milon of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md. Azam Khan of Jonotar Dal (pen), Md. Kajol Bhuiyan of Gono Forum (rising sun), Md. Al Amin Dewan of Islamic Front Bangladesh (chair).

Elected MPs: 2008 & 2014: Meher Afroze Chumki (Awami League).
