13th National Parliament Elections: Barisal District
In Barisal district, the electoral field has traditionally been closely contested between the Awami League and BNP. This pattern is reflected in the results of most national elections, except the last three. However, with the Awami League absent from the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections, the electoral landscape in Barisal has shifted. The main contest is now expected to be between BNP and Jamaat. Below is an overview of the six parliamentary constituencies in Barisal district.
Barisal-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 119): Barisal-1 comprises Agailjhara and Gournadi Upazilas.
Candidates: Five candidates are contesting: Md Kamrul Islam Khan of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Zahir Uddin Swapon of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Abdus Sobhan (independent, football), Md Rasel Sardar of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), and Cherniabat Sekandar Ali of Jatiya Party (bicycle).
Elected MPs: In 1991 and 1996, Abul Hasnat Abdullah of Awami League was elected. In 2001, Zahir Uddin Swapon of BNP won, and in 2008, Talukdar Md Yunus of Awami League was elected.
Barisal-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 120): Barisal-2 comprises Uzirpur and Banaripara Upazilas.
Candidates: Eight candidates are contesting: Sardar Sarfuddin Ahmed of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md Nesar Uddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Abdul Mannan of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Md Abul Kalam Azad of Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JASAD (car), M A Jalil of Jatiya Party (plough), A Haq of Jatiya Party-JP (bicycle), Saheb Ali of National Peoples Party-NPP (mango), and Ranjit Kumar Baroi of Ganadhikar Parishad-GOP (truck).
Elected MPs: In 1991, Rashed Khan Menon of Bangladesh Workers Party was elected. In 1996, Golam Faruk Abhi of Jatiya Party won. In 2001, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal of BNP was elected, and in 2008, Monirul Islam Moni of Awami League won.
Barisal-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 121): Barisal-3 comprises Muladi and Babuganj Upazilas.
Candidates: Six candidates are contesting: Md Sirajul Islam of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Zainul Abedin of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Yamin HM Fardin of Ganadhikar Parishad (truck), Md Asaduzzaman Bhuiya of Amar Bangladesh Party (eagle), Golam Kibria Tipu of Jatiya Party (plough), and Md Azmul Hasan Jihad of Bangladesh Socialist Party-BASAD (moi).
Elected MPs: In 1991, 1996, and 2001, Mosharraf Hossain Mongu of BNP was elected. In 2008, Golam Kibria Tipu of Jatiya Party won.
Barisal-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 122): Barisal-4 comprises Mehendiganj and Hizla Upazilas.
Candidates: Five candidates are contesting: Abdul Jalil of Bangladesh Sangsritik Muktijot-MUKTIJOT (stick), Abdus Salam Khokon of JASAD (car), Syed Eshak Md Abul Khayer of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Md Rajib Ahsan of BNP (sheaf of paddy), and Md Abdul Jabbar of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales).
Elected MPs: In 1991, Mohiuddin Ahmed of Awami League was elected. In 1996 and 2001, Shah M Abul Hossain of BNP won. In 2008, Md Mezbuddin Farhad of BNP was elected. In 2014 and 2018, Pankaj Dev Nath of Awami League won, and in 2024, Pankaj Dev Nath was elected as an independent candidate.
Barisal-5 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 123): Barisal-5 comprises Barisal City Corporation and Barisal Sadar Upazila.
Candidates: Six candidates are contesting: Abdul Hannan Sikdar of NPP (mango), Monisha Chakraborty of BASAD (moi), Md Saidur of Bangladesh Socialist Party (Marxist) (scissors), Md Mojibur Rahman Sarwar of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Akhtar Rahman of Jatiya Party (plough), and Mufti Syed Md Faizul Karim of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan).
Elected MPs: In 1991, Abdur Rahman Biswas of BNP was elected. In the 1991 by-election, Mojibur Rahman Sarwar of BNP won. In 1996, Nasim Biswas of BNP won, and in 1998 by-election, Mojibur Rahman Sarwar of BNP was elected. In 2001 and 2008, Mojibur Rahman Sarwar of BNP retained the seat.
Barisal-6 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 124): Barisal-6 comprises Bakerganj Upazila.
Candidates: Six candidates are contesting: Md Kamrul Islam Khan (independent, football), Abdul Quddus of Bangladesh Muslim League (hurricane), Mufti Syed Md Faizul Karim of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Md Salauddin Mia of Ganadhikar Parishad-GOP (truck), Md Mahmudun Nabi of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), and Abul Hossain Khan of BNP (sheaf of paddy).
Elected MPs: In 1991, Yunus Khan of BNP was elected. In 1995 by-election, Abdur Rashid Khan of BNP won. In 1996, Syed Masud Reza of Awami League was elected. In 2001, Abul Hossain Khan of BNP won, and in 2008, ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader of Jatiya Party was elected.
