13th National Parliament Elections: Bogura District
Bogura is a city in northern Bangladesh. The district has a total of seven parliamentary constituencies. Following the publication of the final list of candidates by the Election Commission for the 13th National Parliament elections, election campaigning began across the district from last Thursday (January 22).
Bogura-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 36): Bogura-1 constituency comprises Sariakandi Upazila and Sonatola Upazila of Bogura district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 355,155. Of them, 175,569 are male voters, 179,582 are female voters, and four are transgender voters.
Candidates: A total of five candidates are contesting in this constituency in the upcoming election. They are: Kazi Rafiqul Islam from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Md Shahabuddin from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Md Asadul Haque from the Bangladesh Congress; A B N Mostafa Kamal Pasha from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; and Md Zulfiqar Ali from Gano Forum.
Elected MPs: Abdul Momin Mondol of the Jatiya Party was elected twice consecutively in the 1986 and 1988 elections. In the 1991 election, BNP candidate Habibur Rahman won the seat and retained it in both the February and June 1996 elections. In 2001, BNP’s Kazi Rafiqul Islam was elected. In the 2008 election, Awami League candidate Abdul Mannan won and was re-elected in the 2014 and 2018 elections. In the by-election held on July 15, 2020, Awami League candidate Shahadara Mannan Shilpi was elected. She again won the seat in the 2024 general election, retaining it for the Awami League.
Bogura-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 37): Bogura-2 constituency consists of Shibganj Upazila of Bogura district.
The total number of voters in this constituency is 326,230, including 163,498 male voters, 162,729 female voters, and three transgender voters.
Candidates: Seven candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Md Jamal Uddin from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; Abul Azad Mohammad Shahaduzzaman from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Shariful Islam Jinnah from the Jatiya Party; Md Rezaul Karim Talu as an independent candidate; Mahmudur Rahman Manna from Nagorik Oikya; Mir Shahe Alam from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); and Md Selim Sarkar from Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP).
Elected MPs: Independent candidate Mozzafar Hossain was elected in 1986. In 1988, Syed Maskurul Alam Chowdhury of the Bangladesh Freedom Party won the seat.
In 1991, Shahadat-uz-Zaman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was elected. In the February 1996 election, BNP candidate Rezaul Bari Dina won, while in the June election of the same year BNP’s A K M Hafizur Rahman captured the seat. Rezaul Bari Dina again won in 2001. In 2008, A K M Hafizur Rahman was elected as a BNP candidate.
Shariful Islam Jinnah of the Jatiya Party was elected consecutively in the 2014, 2018 and most recently in the 2024 elections.
Bogura-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 38): Bogura-3 constituency comprises Adamdighi Upazila and Dupchanchia Upazila of Bogura district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 324,436, including 162,073 male voters, 162,361 female voters, and two transgender voters.
Candidates: Four candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Md Abdul Mohit Talukder from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Nur Mohammad from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Md Shahinul Islam from the Jatiya Party; and Md Shahjahan Ali Talukder from Islami Andolan Bangladesh.
Elected MPs: A B M Shahjahan of the Jatiya Party was elected consecutively in the 1986 and 1988 elections. In 1991, BNP candidate Abdul Majid Talukder won. In the February 1996 election, BNP’s Md Golam Mawla won the seat, while Abdul Majid Talukder again won in the June 1996 election. Abdul Momen Talukder of the BNP was elected consecutively in the 2001 and 2008 elections. Nurul Islam Talukder of the Jatiya Party won in the 2014 and 2018 elections. In the most recent 2024 election, independent candidate Khan Muhammad Saifullah Al Mehdi won the seat.
Bogura-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 39): Bogura-4 constituency consists of Kahalu Upazila and Nandigram Upazila of Bogura district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 344,517, including 171,337 male voters, 173,174 female voters, and six transgender voters.
Candidates: Four candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Md Mosharraf Hossain from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Shaheen Mostafa Kamal from the Jatiya Party; Muha Idris Ali from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; and Md Mostafa Faisal from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Elected MPs: Mamdudur Rahman Chowdhury was elected from the Jatiya Party in 1986. In 1991, Azizul Haque Molla won from the BNP. In a 1994 by-election, Ziaul Haque Molla of the BNP won the seat and retained it in both the February and June 1996 elections. He again won in 2001. In 2008, Z I M Mostafa Ali was elected from the BNP. In 2014, A K M Rezaul Karim Tansen of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal won the seat. Mosharraf Hossain of the BNP won in 2018. In the 2023 by-election and the 2024 general election, A K M Rezaul Karim Tansen again won the seat from the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal.
Bogura-5 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 40): Bogura-5 constituency comprises Sherpur Upazila and Dhunat Upazila of Bogura district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 540,063, including 265,166 male voters, 274,894 female voters, and three transgender voters.
Candidates: Five candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Khan Qudrat-e-Sakrain from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP); Md Dabibur Rahman from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Shipon Kumar Rabidas from the Communist Party of Bangladesh; Golam Mohammad Siraj from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); and Mir Md Mahmudur Rahman from Islami Andolan Bangladesh.
Elected MPs: Ferdous Zaman Mukul won the seat in 1986 as an Awami League-nominated candidate. In 1988, Shahjahan Ali Talukder of the Jatiya Party won the seat.
Golam Mohammad Siraj of the BNP was elected in 1991 and retained the seat in both the February and June 1996 elections, as well as in 2001. In 2008, Habibur Rahman of the Awami League won and was re-elected in the 2014 and 2018 elections.In the most recent 2024 election, Mujibur Rahman Majnu, an Awami League-nominated candidate, won the seat.
Bogura-6 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 41): Bogura-6 constituency consists of Bogura Sadar Upazila. The total number of voters in this constituency is 428,046, including 210,669 male voters, 217,371 female voters, and 22 transgender voters.
Candidates: Five candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Tareq Rahman from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Md Abidur Rahman from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Abu Numan Md Mamunur Rashid from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; Dilruba Tabong from the Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BASD); and Abdullah Al-Waki from the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD).
Elected MPs: Abdur Rahman Fakir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won in 1986. In 1988, Saifur Rahman Bhandari won as an independent candidate. In 1991, Mujibur Rahman of the BNP was elected and retained the seat in the February 1996 election. In the June 1996 election, Khaleda Zia won the seat as a BNP candidate. In a by-election held in September the same year, Zahurul Islam of the BNP was elected. Khaleda Zia again won the seat in the 2001 and 2008 elections. In the 2009 by-election, Jamir Uddin Sarkar of the BNP was elected. In 2014, Nurul Islam Omar won from the Jatiya Party (Ershad). In 2018, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected from the BNP, while in the 2019 by-election G M Siraj of the BNP won the seat. In the 2023 by-election and the 2024 general election, Ragebul Ahsan Ripu was elected as an Awami League-nominated candidate.
Bogura-7 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 42): Bogura-7 constituency comprises Gabtali Upazila and Shajahanpur Upazila of Bogura district. The total number of voters in this constituency stands at 512,265, including 257,277 male voters, 254,986 female voters, and two transgender voters.
Candidates: Four candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Morshed Milton from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Md Golam Rabbani from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Md Shafiqul Islam from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; and Md Ansar Ali from the Bangladesh Muslim League.
Elected MPs: Aminul Islam Sarkar won the seat in 1986 as a Jatiya Party candidate. In February 1991, Khaleda Zia was elected from the BNP, but in a by-election held in September of the same year Helaluzzaman Talukder Lalu won as a BNP candidate. Khaleda Zia again won in both the February and June 1996 elections, while Helaluzzaman Talukder Lalu was elected in the 1996 by-election. In October 2001, Khaleda Zia won the seat, and in a November 2001 by-election Helaluzzaman Talukder Lalu again won as a BNP candidate. Khaleda Zia won the seat in the 2008 election. In the 2009 by-election, Moudud Ahmed was elected from the BNP. In the 2014 election, Muhammad Altaf Ali won from the Jatiya Party (Ershad). In 2018, Rezaul Karim Babul was elected as an independent candidate. In the most recent 2024 election, Mostafa Alam Nannu won the seat as an Awami League-nominated candidate.
