Gaibandha district is an administrative region of the Rangpur Division in northern Bangladesh. The district was established in 1984. Gaibandha has a total of five parliamentary constituencies. Following the publication of the final list of candidates by the Election Commission for the 13th National Parliament elections, election campaigning began across the district from last Thursday (January 22).


Gaibandha-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 29):  Gaibandha-1 constituency comprises Sundarganj Upazila of Gaibandha district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 393,046. Of them, 193,952 are male voters, 199,093 are female voters, and there is one transgender voter.


Candidates: A total of eight candidates are contesting in this constituency in the upcoming election. They are: independent candidates Mst. Salma Akter and Md. Mostafa Mohsin; Md. Majedur Rahman from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Khandaker Ziaul Islam Mohammad Ali from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Shamim Haider Patwari from the Jatiya Party; Parmananda Das from the Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist); Md. Kawsar Azam Hannu from the Amjanatar Dal; and Md. Ramjan Ali from Islami Andolan Bangladesh.


Elected MPs: Hafizur Rahman Pramanik of the Jatiya Party won in 1986. In February 1996 the seat remained vacant, but in June Wahiduzzaman Sarkar of the Jatiya Party (Ershad) was elected. Abdul Aziz Mia of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won in 2001, and Abdul Kader Khan of the Jatiya Party was elected in 2008. Manjurul Islam Liton of the Bangladesh Awami League won in 2014, while Golam Mostafa Ahmed was elected in the 2017 by-election. In the 2018 by-election, Shamim Haider Patwari of the Jatiya Party (Ershad) won the seat. In the most recent 2024 election, independent candidate Abdullah Nahid Nigar emerged victorious.


Gaibandha-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 30): Gaibandha-2 constituency consists of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila. There are a total of 381,970 voters in this constituency, including 187,214 male voters, 194,750 female voters, and six transgender voters.


Candidates: Seven candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Md. Shahedur Jahan from the Janatar Dal; Md. Abdul Karim from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Md. Abdur Rashid Sarkar from the Jatiya Party; Md. Anisuzzaman Khan Babu from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Mihir Kumar Ghosh from the Communist Party of Bangladesh; Ahsanul Habib Sayeed from the Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist); and Mohammad Abdul Majed from Islami Andolan Bangladesh.


Elected MPs: Abdur Rouf Mia won the seat in 1986, while Azgar Ali Khan was elected in 1988. In 1991, Abdur Rashid Sarkar of the Jatiya Party won the election. Saiful Alam Saja of the BNP was elected in February 1996, but Abdur Rashid Sarkar again won the seat later that year. Lutfur Rahman of the Bangladesh Awami League was elected in 2001, and Mahbub Ara Begum Gini won in 2008. Information on the 2014 and 2018 elections is unavailable. In the most recent 2024 election, independent candidate Shah Sarwar Kabir was elected.


Gaibandha-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 31): Gaibandha-3 constituency comprises Sadullapur Upazila and Palashbari Upazila of Gaibandha district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 474,889, including 232,849 male voters, 242,033 female voters, and seven transgender voters.


Candidates: A total of ten candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: independent candidate S.M. Khademul Islam Khudi; Prof. Dr. Syed Moinul Hasan Sadiq from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Md. Abdullah Adil; Abul Kawsar Mohammad Nazrul Islam from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Md. Monjurul Haque; Md. A.T.M. Awlad Hossain from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; Md. Suruj Mia from Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP); independent candidate Md. Azizur Rahman; Md. Mossaddiqul Islam from Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh; and Moinur Rabbi Chowdhury from the Jatiya Party.


Elected MPs: Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury of the Jatiya Party won the elections in 1986, 1988 and 1991. In February 1996, Mokhlesur Rahman of the BNP was elected, but Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury again won the seat in June of the same year. In 2001, Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury was elected as a candidate of the Islami Jatiya Oikya Front, and he again won from the Jatiya Party in 2008. Yunus Ali Sarkar of the Bangladesh Awami League won the seat in both the 2014 and 2018 elections. Umme Kulsum Smriti was elected in the 2020 by-election and retained the seat in the 2024 election.


Gaibandha-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 32): Gaibandha-4 constituency consists of Gobindaganj Upazila of Gaibandha district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 439,925, including 216,965 male voters, 222,954 female voters, and six transgender voters.


Candidates: Six candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Syed Touhidul Islam Tuhin from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; Md. Abdur Rahim Sarkar from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Md. Atowarul Islam from the Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh; independent candidate Md. Abdur Rouf Akand; Kazi Md. Mashiur Rahman from the Jatiya Party; and Mohammad Shamim Kaiser from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).


Elected MPs: Lutfur Rahman Chowdhury of the Jatiya Party won in 1986, while Ataur Rahman was elected in 1988. Lutfur Rahman Chowdhury again won from the Jatiya Party in 1991. In February 1996, Abdul Mannan Mondal of the BNP was elected, but Lutfur Rahman Chowdhury regained the seat in June 1996. Abdul Mottaleb Akand of the BNP won in 2001, and Shamim Kaiser Lincoln retained the seat in the 2006 by-election. Monwar Hossain Chowdhury of the Bangladesh Awami League was elected in 2008. Independent candidate Abul Kalam Azad won in 2014, while Monwar Hossain Chowdhury again won in 2018. In the most recent 2024 election, Abul Kalam Azad won the seat as a Bangladesh Awami League candidate.


Gaibandha-5 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 33): Gaibandha-5 constituency comprises Phulchhari Upazila and Saghata Upazila of Gaibandha district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 362,887, including 180,617 male voters, 182,269 female voters, and one transgender voter.


Candidates: Nine candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Shamim Haider Patwari from the Jatiya Party; Md. Faruk Alam Sarkar from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Md. Abdul Wareth from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; independent candidate Nahiduzzaman Nishad; Md. Azizul Islam from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; independent candidate Hasan Mehdi Bidyut; Mst. Rahela Khatun from the Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist); independent candidate A.H.M. Golam Shahid Ranjhu; and Shri Nirmal from the Communist Party of Bangladesh.


Elected MPs: Fazle Rabbi Mia of the Jatiya Party won in 1986. In February 1996, independent candidate Matiar Rahman Tuku was elected. Roushan Ershad of the Islami Jatiya Oikya Front won in 2001. Fazle Rabbi Mia was elected consecutively as a Bangladesh Awami League candidate in 2008, 2014 and 2018.
Mahmud Hasan Ripon of the Bangladesh Awami League won the 2023 by-election and was re-elected in the 2024 election.
