13th National Parliament Elections: Jessore District
In Jessore district, the Awami League has traditionally held a stronger position in the electoral field, though the BNP and Jamaat have consistently posed challenges. This pattern is evident in the results of most relatively credible national elections, except the last three. However, with the Awami League absent from the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections, the electoral scenario in Jessore has shifted. The main contest in the district is now expected to be between the BNP and Jamaat. Below is an overview of the six parliamentary constituencies in Jessore district.
Jessore-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 85): Jessore-1 comprises Sharsha Upazila.
Candidates: Four candidates are contesting the seat: Md Baktiar Rahman of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Muhammad Azizur Rahman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Md Nuruzzaman Liton of BNP (sheaf of paddy), and Md Jahangir Alam Chonchol of Jatiya Party (plough).
Elected MPs: In 1986, Noor Hussain of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was elected. In 1991 and 1996, Tabibur Rahman Sardar of the Awami League won. In 2001, Ali Qadar of BNP was elected, and in 2008, Sheikh Afil Uddin of the Awami League won the seat.
Jessore-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 86): Jessore-2 comprises Chaugacha and Jhikargacha Upazilas.
Candidates: Eight candidates are contesting: Md Shamsul Haque of Bangladesh Nationalist Front (television), Md Mehedi Hasan (independent, football), Md Imran Khan of Bangladesh Socialist Party-BASAD (moi), Md Zahurul Islam (independent, horse), Md Aminul Islam of Amar Bangladesh Party (eagle), Md Moslehuddin Farid of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Md Sabira Sultana of BNP (sheaf of paddy), and Md Idris Ali of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan).
Elected MPs: In 1986, Makbul Hossain of Jamaat-e-Islami was elected. In 1991 and 1996, Rafiqul Islam of Awami League won. In 2001, Abu Saeed Muhammad Shahadat Hossain of Jamaat-e-Islami was elected, and in 2008, Mostafa Faruk Mohammad of Awami League won.
Jessore-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 87): Jessore-3 comprises Jessore Sadar Upazila excluding Basundia Union.
Candidates: Six candidates are contesting: Md Abdul Qader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Md Rashed Khan of Bangladesh Communist Party (spade), Md Khobir Gazi of Jatiya Party (plough), Md Nizamuddin Amit of Jatiya Ganotantrik Party-JAGPA (glasses), Anindya Islam Amit of BNP (sheaf of paddy), and Md Shoaib Hossain of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan).
Elected MPs: In 1991, Rawshan Ali of Awami League was elected. In 1996, Ali Reza Raju of Awami League won, in 2001 Tarikul Islam of BNP was elected, and in 2008, Khaledur Rahman Tito of Awami League won the seat.
Jessore-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 88): Jessore-4 comprises Bagharnpara and Abhaynagar Upazilas including Basundia Union.
Candidates: Seven candidates are contesting: Md Nazim Uddin Al-Azad (independent, motorcycle), Md Golam Rasool of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Md A Latif Khan of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD (umbrella), Kazi Khairuzzaman Shipon (independent, deer), Sajan Kumar Mistri of Jatiya Party (plough), Md Matiar Rahman Farazi of BNP (sheaf of paddy), and Md Asheq Elahi of Khelafat Majlis (wall clock).
Elected MPs: In 1986, 1991, and 1996, Shah Hadiuzzaman of Awami League was elected. In 2001, M M Amin Uddin of BNP won, and in 2008, Ranjit Kumar Roy of Awami League was elected.
Jessore-5 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 89): Jessore-5 comprises Monirampur Upazila.
Candidates: Six candidates are contesting: Md Zainal Abedin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Rashid Ahmad of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md Kamruzzaman (independent, football), Gazi Enamul Haque of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Shahid Md Iqbal Hossain (independent, pitcher), and Md A Halim of Jatiya Party (plough).
Elected MPs: In 1986, independent candidate Muhammad Wakkas was elected. In 1991 and 1996, Khan Tipu Sultan of Awami League won. In 2001, Muhammad Wakkas of Jamaat-e-Islami was elected, and in 2008, Khan Tipu Sultan of Awami League won the seat.
Jessore-6 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 90): Jessore-6 comprises Keshabpur Upazila.
Candidates: Five candidates are contesting: Md Moktar Ali of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Md Mahmud Hasan of Amar Bangladesh Party (eagle), Md Abul Hossain Azad of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md Shahidul Islam of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), and G M Hasan of Jatiya Party (plough).
Elected MPs: In 1986, Abdul Halim of Awami League was elected. In 1991, Md Sakhaowat Hossain of Jamaat-e-Islami won. In 1996, Abu Sharaf Hizbul Qader Sadeq of Awami League was elected, and in 2008, Sheikh Abdul Wahab of Awami League won the seat.
