13th National Parliament Elections: Jhenaidah District
In Jhenaidah district, the Awami League has traditionally maintained a strong position at the polls. This trend has been reflected in the outcomes of most relatively transparent elections held in the past, with the exception of the last three national elections. However, with the Awami League absent from the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections, the electoral landscape of the district has shifted. This time, the contest in Jhenaidah is expected to be primarily between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. Below is an overview of the four parliamentary constituencies in the district.
Jhenaidah-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 81): Jhenaidah-1 constituency comprises Shailkupa Upazila of Jhenaidah district. The total number of voters in the constituency is 306,338, including 153,579 male and 152,759 female voters. There are no transgender voters.
Candidates: A total of five candidates are contesting this seat in the upcoming election. They include Md Matiar Rahman of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (Hand Fan symbol), Abu Saleh Md Matiur Rahman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (Scales symbol), Md Asaduzzaman of BNP (Sheaf of Paddy symbol), and Monika Alam of the Jatiya Party (Plough symbol).
Elected MPs: Abdul Wahab of BNP won the seat in the 1991 election and again in the June 1996 election. Abdul Hai of the Awami League was elected consecutively in the 2001 and 2008 elections.
Jhenaidah-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 82): Jhenaidah-2 constituency consists of Harinakundu Upazila and the areas of Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila excluding Naldanga, Ghorashal, Fursandhi and Maharajpur unions. The constituency has a total of 476,306 voters, including 237,535 male and 238,766 female voters. There are five transgender voters.
Candidates: Six candidates are contesting this seat. They are HM Momtajur Rahman of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (Hand Fan symbol), Md Abdul Majid of BNP (Sheaf of Paddy symbol), Md Asadul Islam of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal–BASAD (Ladder symbol), Ali Azam Md Abu Bakar of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (Scales symbol), Saogat ul Islam of the Jatiya Party (Plough symbol), and Md Abu Towab of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (Sickle symbol).
Elected MPs: Masiur Rahman of BNP was elected consecutively in the 1991, 1996 and 2001 elections. In 2008, Shafiqul Islam Apu of the Awami League won the seat.
Jhenaidah-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 83): Jhenaidah-3 constituency comprises Kotchandpur Upazila and Maheshpur Upazila of Jhenaidah district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 403,225, including 203,945 male and 199,277 female voters. There are three transgender voters.
Candidates: Four candidates are contesting this seat: Mohammad Mehedi Hasan of BNP (Sheaf of Paddy symbol), Md Matiar Rahman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (Scales symbol), Md Suman Kabir of Gana Odhikar Parishad (Truck symbol), and Maulana Sarwar Hossain of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (Hand Fan symbol).
Elected MPs: Shahidul Islam Master of BNP was elected consecutively in the 1991 election, the June 1996 election, and the 2001 election. In 2008, Shafiqul Azam Khan of the Awami League won the seat.
Jhenaidah-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 84): Jhenaidah-4 constituency consists of Kaliganj Upazila, along with Naldanga, Ghorashal, Fursandhi and Maharajpur unions of Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila. The total number of voters in the constituency is 315,622, including 159,631 male and 155,987 female voters. There are four transgender voters.
Candidates: Six candidates are contesting this seat. They include Md Abu Talib of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (Scales symbol), Md Saiful Islam Firoz as an independent candidate (Cup and Saucer symbol), Emdadul Islam (Bacchu) of the Jatiya Party (Plough symbol), Khaniya Khanam of Gana Forum (Rising Sun symbol), Abdul Jalil of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (Hand Fan symbol), and Md Rashed Khan of BNP (Sheaf of Paddy symbol).
Elected MPs: Shahiduzzaman Beltu of BNP was elected consecutively in the 1991 election, the June 1996 election, and the 2001 election. In 2008, Abdul Mannan of the Awami League won the seat.
