13th National Parliament Elections: Joypurhat District

Joypurhat district is an administrative region of the Rajshahi Division in northwestern Bangladesh. The district has a total of two parliamentary constituencies. Following the publication of the final list of candidates by the Election Commission for the 13th National Parliament elections, election campaigning began across the district from last Thursday (January 22).

Joypurhat-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 34): Joypurhat-1 constituency comprises Joypurhat Sadar Upazila and Panchbibi Upazila of Joypurhat district.
The total number of voters in this constituency is 443,727. Of them, 221,044 are male voters, 222,677 are female voters, and six are transgender voters.

Candidates: A total of five candidates are contesting in this constituency in the upcoming election. They are: Toufika Dewan from the Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist); Md. Fazlur Rahman Sayeed from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Md. Wazed Parvez from the Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BASAD); Md. Masud Rana Pradhan from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); and Sabekun Nahar as an independent candidate.

Elected MPs: In the 1986 election, Abbas Ali Mondal of the Bangladesh Awami League was elected as a Member of Parliament. In 1988, Khandaker Aliuzzaman Alam of the Jatiya Party won the seat. In the 1991 election, BNP candidate Golam Rabbani was elected, and he was re-elected in the February election of the same year. However, in the June 1996 election, BNP candidate Abdul Alim won the seat. Abdul Alim was re-elected in the 2001 election. In the 2008 election, BNP candidate Mozahar Ali Pradhan was elected as MP. After that, the seat remained under the control of the Bangladesh Awami League for a long period. In the 2014, 2018 and most recent 2024 elections, Awami League candidate Shamsul Alam Dudu was elected as MP for three consecutive terms.

Joypurhat-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 35): Joypurhat-2 is one of the 300 parliamentary constituencies of the National Parliament of Bangladesh and is located in Joypurhat district as Constituency No. 35. The total number of voters in this constituency is 335,973. Of them, 166,598 are male voters, 169,374 are female voters, and there is one transgender voter.

Candidates: A total of three candidates are contesting in this constituency in the upcoming election. They are: S.M. Rashedul Alam from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Md. Abdul Bari from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); and S.A. Zahid from the Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party).

Elected MPs: In the 1986 election, Awami League candidate Abdur Razzak Akand was elected as MP. In 1988, Jatiya Party candidate Kazi Rabbiul Hasan won the seat. In the 1991 election, BNP candidate Abu Yusuf Md. Khalilur Rahman was elected and was re-elected in the February 1996 election. He retained the seat as a BNP candidate in the June 1996 election as well as in the 2001 election. In the 2008 election, BNP candidate Golam Mostafa was elected as MP. In the 2014, 2018 and 2024 elections, Awami League candidate Abu Saeed Al Mahmud Swapan was elected as MP for three consecutive terms.
