13th National Parliament Elections: Kishoreganj District
In Kishoreganj district, the Awami League and the BNP have historically enjoyed almost equal strength in the electoral arena. This balance is evident in the results of past national elections, excluding those held in 2014, 2018, and 2024. However, with the Awami League absent from the 13th National Parliament elections, voters are recalculating their choices. Below is an overview of the electoral contest across the six parliamentary constituencies in Kishoreganj district.
Kishoreganj-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 162): Kishoreganj-1 comprises Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila and Hossainpur Upazila.
Candidates: A total of eight candidates are contesting in this constituency. They include Alal Mia of the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) (scissors), Hedayatullah Hadi of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis (rickshaw), Md Masud Mia of Socialist Party of Bangladesh–BASD (ladder), Tarek Mohammad Shahidul Islam of the National Peoples Party (NPP) (mango), Mazharul Islam of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md Enamul Haque of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (sickle), Ahmad Ali of Khilafat Majlis (wall clock), and Md Rezaul Karim Khan (independent – rooster).
Former MPs: In 1986, AKM Shamsul Haque of the Awami League was elected. ABM Zahidul Haque of BNP won in 1991. In 1996, AKM Shamsul Haque regained the seat for the Awami League. Alauddin Ahmad of Jatiya Party (Manju) won the 1999 by-election. Idris Ali of BNP was elected in 2001, and Syed Ashraful Islam of the Awami League won in 2008.
Kishoreganj-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 163): This constituency consists of Pakundia and Katiadi upazilas.
Candidates: Eight candidates are in the race, including Advocate Md Jalal Uddin of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md Anisuzzaman Khokon (independent – peacock), Md Billal Hossain of Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) (television), Md Afzal Hossain Bhuiya of Jatiya Party (plough), Md Shafiqul Islam of Gono Odhikar Parishad (truck), Nur Uddin Ahmed (independent – motorcycle), Md Shafiqul Islam of Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), and Md Abul Bashar of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan).
Former MPs: Akhtaruzzaman of BNP won in both 1991 and 1996. MA Mannan of the Awami League was elected in 2001 and again in 2008.
Kishoreganj-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 164): Kishoreganj-3 includes Tarail and Karimganj upazilas.
Candidates: Seven candidates are contesting, among them Mohammad Aminul Islam of NPP (mango), Jihad Khan of Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), AKM Alamgir (independent – football), Md Abu Bakar Siddique of Jatiya Party (plough), Dr Muhammad Osman Faruk of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Delowar Hossain Bhuiyan of the Democratic Party (pigeon), and Md Alamgir Hossain of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan).
Former MPs: Fazlur Rahman of the Awami League won in 1986. Ataur Rahman Khan of BNP was elected in 1991. Syed Ashraful Islam of the Awami League won in 1996 and 2001. Mujibul Haque Chunnu of Jatiya Party won in 2008.
Kishoreganj-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 165): This constituency comprises Itna, Mithamain, and Austagram upazilas.
Candidates: Eight candidates are vying for the seat, including Nurul Islam of Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh (apple), Khairul Islam Thakur of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis (rickshaw), Billal Ahmed Majumdar of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Md Zainal Abedin of NPP (mango), Md Shahin Reza Chowdhury (independent – horse), Kazi Reha Kabir (independent – football), Md Fazlur Rahman of BNP (sheaf of paddy), and Md Rokon Reza Sheikh of Jamaat-e-Islami (scales).
Former MPs: Mizanul Haque of the Awami League was elected in 1991 and 1996. Osman Faruk of BNP won in 2001, and Abdul Hamid of the Awami League was elected in 2008.
Kishoreganj-5 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 166): Kishoreganj-5 consists of Nikli and Bajitpur upazilas.
Candidates: Eight candidates are contesting, including Syed Ehsanul Huda of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md Ramzan Ali of Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), AHM Qaiyum (Hasnat Qaiyum) (independent – deer), Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Iqbal (independent – duck), Mohammad Delawar Hossain of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Md Mahbubul Alam of Jatiya Party (plough), Md Sazzad Hossain of Bangladesh Muslim League (hurricane lamp), and Md Oli Ullah of Bangladesh Islamic Front (candle).
Former MPs: Abdul Hamid of the Awami League won repeatedly in 1986, 1991, and 1996. Mujibor Rahman Manju of BNP was elected in 2001, and Afzal Hossain of the Awami League won in 2008.
Kishoreganj-6 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 167): This constituency includes Kuliarchar and Bhairab upazilas.
Candidates: Nine candidates are contesting, including Md Shariful Alam of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Shafi Uddin Ahmad of Gono Forum (rising sun), Dr Mohammad Habil Mia of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (sickle), Md Nazrul Islam of NPP (mango), Mohammad Musa Khan of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Ataullah Amin of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis (rickshaw), Naimul Hasan of Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh (apple), Md Rubel Hossain of Bangladesh Islamic Front (candle), and Mohammad Ayub Hossain of Jatiya Party (plough).
Former MPs: Amir Uddin Ahmed of BNP won in 1991. Mujibur Rahman Manju of BNP was elected in 1996 and 2001. In 2008, Zillur Rahman of the Awami League won the seat.
