13th National Parliament Elections: Kurigram District
Kurigram is a district of the Rangpur Division in Bangladesh. The district is located in the northern part of the country along the Indian border. During British rule, the area was organised as a subdivision and was not established as a district until 1984 under the decentralisation programme of the then Chief Martial Law Administrator, Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
Kurigram-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 25): Kurigram-1 constituency comprises Bhurungamari Upazila and Nageshwari Upazila of Kurigram district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 529,167. Of them, 263,267 are male voters, 265,897 are female voters, and three are transgender voters.
Candidates: A total of six candidates are contesting in this constituency in the upcoming election. They are: Md. Abdul Hai from the Zaker Party; A.K.M. Mostafizur Rahman from the Jatiya Party; Saifur Rahman Rana from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Md. Anowarul Islam from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Md. Harisul Bari from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; and Md. Bin Yamin Mollah from Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP).
Elected MPs: Saifur Rahman Rana of the BNP was elected in February 1996, while A.K.M. Mostafizur Rahman of the Jatiya Party (Ershad) won in June of the same year. A candidate of the Islami Jatiya Oikya Front won the 2001 election. The Jatiya Party (Ershad) regained the seat in 2008. In the 2018 election, Aslam Hossain Sowdagar of the Bangladesh Awami League was elected. In the most recent 2024 election, A.K.M. Mostafizur Rahman of the Jatiya Party (Ershad) was re-elected.
Kurigram-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 26) : Kurigram-2 constituency consists of Rajarhat Upazila, Phulbari Upazila and Kurigram Sadar Upazila. The total number of voters in this constituency is 567,206, including 280,734 male voters, 286,469 female voters and three transgender voters.
Candidates: A total of eight candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Md. Noor Bakht from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; Md. Atikur Rahman from the Bangladesh Jatiya Party; Panir Uddin Ahmed from the Jatiya Party; Noor Mohammad from the Communist Party of Bangladesh; Atikur Rahman Mojahid from the National Citizen Party (NCP); Muhammad Abdus Salam from Nagorik Oikya; Md. Nazrul Islam Khan from the Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party); and Md. Sohel Hosnain Kayekbad from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Elected MPs: Tajul Islam Chowdhury of the Jatiya Party won in 1986. Md. Umar Faruk of the BNP was elected in February 1996, but Tajul Islam Chowdhury regained the seat in June 1996. A candidate of the Islami Jatiya Oikya Front won the 2001 election. In 2008, Hussain Muhammad Ershad of the Jatiya Party was elected. Tajul Islam Chowdhury won again in 2014, Panir Uddin Ahmed in 2018, and Hamidul Haque Khandaker of the Bangladesh Awami League was elected in 2024.
Kurigram-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 27): Kurigram-3 constituency comprises Ulipur Upazila of Kurigram district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 347,265, including 171,574 male voters and 175,691 female voters. There are no transgender voters.
Candidates: Five candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Sarkar Md. Nure Ershad Siddiqui from Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP); Tasvir Ul Alam from the BNP; Abdus Sobhan from the Jatiya Party; Dr. Md. Akkas Ali Sarkar from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; and Md. Mahbubul Alam from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Elected MPs: A.K.M. Maidul Islam of the Jatiya Party won in 1986. Amjad Hossain Talukdar of the Bangladesh Awami League won in 1991. In February 1996, A.K.M. Maidul Islam was elected from the BNP, while in June of the same year Hussain Muhammad Ershad of the Jatiya Party (Ershad) won the seat. In the September 1996 by-election, Mozammel Hossain Lalu of the same party was elected. Matiur Rahman of the Islami Jatiya Oikya Front won in 2001. A.K.M. Maidul Islam of the Jatiya Party (Ershad) won consecutively in the 2008 and 2014 elections.
Kurigram-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 28): Kurigram-4 constituency consists of Roumari Upazila, Char Rajibpur Upazila and Chilmari Upazila of Kurigram district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 338,412, including 168,711 male voters, 169,692 female voters and nine transgender voters.
Candidates: Seven candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Md. Azizur Rahman from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Md. Mostafizur Rahman from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Sheikh Mohammad Abdul Khalek from the Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BASD); independent candidate Md. Rukunuzzaman; Raju Ahmed from the Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist); and K.M. Fazlul Mondol from the Jatiya Party.
Elected MPs: Independent candidate Najimuddoula won in 1986 and was later elected as a Jatiya Party candidate in 1988. In a subsequent by-election, Rokonnuddoula of the same party won the seat. Golam Hossain of the Jatiya Party was elected in 1991. In February 1996, Abdul Bari Sarkar of the BNP was elected, but Golam Hossain of the Jatiya Party (Ershad) regained the seat in June. Golam Habib Dulal of the Islami Jatiya Oikya Front won in 2001. Zakir Hossain of the Bangladesh Awami League was elected in 2008. Ruhul Amin of the Jatiya Party (Manju) won in 2014, while Zakir Hossain was again elected in 2018. In the most recent 2024 election, Biplob Hasan Palash of the Bangladesh Awami League won the seat.
