13th National Parliament Elections: Magura District
Magura district has traditionally been a stronghold of the Awami League, a pattern reflected in the results of most relatively credible national elections held in the country, except for the last three. However, in the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections, the absence of the Awami League has changed the electoral dynamics in the district. This time, the main contest is expected to be between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. Below is an overview of the two parliamentary constituencies in Magura district.
Magura-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 91): Magura-1 comprises Shreepur Upazila and parts of Magura Sadar Upazila, including Shatrujitpur, Gopalgram, Kuchiamora, and Berail Polita unions.
Candidates: Seven candidates are contesting this seat in the upcoming election. They are Abdul Matin of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Md Nazirul Islam of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Shompa Basu of Bangladesh Socialist Party–BASAD (moi), Md Khalilur Rahman of Gono Odhikar Parishad (truck), Md Monowar Hossain of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Kazi Rezaul Hossain of Bangladesh Congress (duck), and Md Zakir Hossain Molla of Jatiya Party (plough).
Elected MPs: In 1991, Majid-ul-Haq of BNP was elected. In 1996, 2001, and 2008, Mohammad Sirajul Akbar of the Awami League won the seat.
Magura-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 92): Magura-2 comprises Shalikha Upazila, Mohammadpur Upazila, and parts of Magura Sadar Upazila, including Shatrujitpur, Gopalgram, Kuchiamora, and Berail Polita unions.
Candidates: Four candidates are contesting this seat in the upcoming election. They are Md Mushtarshed Billah of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Moshiyar Rahman of Jatiya Party (plough), Nitai Roy of BNP (sheaf of paddy), and Mostofa Kamal of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan).
Elected MPs: In 1986 and 1991, Mohammad Asaduzzaman of the Awami League was elected. In the 1994 by-election, Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal of BNP won. In 1996, Biren Sikdar of the Awami League was elected, followed by Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal of BNP in 2001, and again Biren Sikdar of the Awami League in 2008.
