13th National Parliament Elections: Meherpur District
Meherpur district is an administrative region of the Khulna Division in the central part of Bangladesh. The district has a total of two parliamentary constituencies. Following the Election Commission’s publication of the final list of candidates for the 13th National Parliament elections, electioneering has been in full swing across the district since last Thursday (January 22).
Meherpur-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 73): The Meherpur-1 constituency comprises Meherpur Sadar Upazila and Mujibnagar Upazila. The total number of voters in this constituency stands at 300,037, including 149,556 male voters and 150,480 female voters. There is also one transgender voter.
Candidates: A total of four candidates are contesting this seat in the upcoming election. They are Md. Abdul Hamid from the Jatiya Party, Masud Arun from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Md. Tajuddin Khan from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and Moha Mizanur Rahman from the Communist Party of Bangladesh.
Elected MPs: In 1986, Mohammad Sahiuddin was elected as an Awami League nominee. In 1988, Ramzan Ali won the seat as a Jatiya Party candidate. Abdul Mannan secured victory for the Awami League in the 1991 election. In both the February and June 1996 elections, Ahmed Ali won as a BNP candidate, while Abdul Mannan was re-elected for the Awami League in the 1999 by-election. In the 2001 election, Masud Arun won the seat for the BNP. Zainal Abedin was elected as an Awami League candidate in 2008. Farhad Hossain subsequently won the seat consecutively as an Awami League candidate in the 2014, 2018 and 2024 elections.
Meherpur-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 74): The Meherpur-2 constituency consists of Gangni Upazila. The total number of voters here is 255,932, including 127,495 male voters and 128,435 female voters. There are two transgender voters in the constituency.
Candidates: Three candidates are contesting this seat in the upcoming election. They are Md. Amzad Hossain from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Md. Abdul Baki from the Jatiya Party, and Md. Nazmul Huda from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Elected MPs: In the 1986 parliamentary election, Mohammad Nurul Haque of the Awami League was elected. In 1988, Bazlul Huda of the Bangladesh Freedom Party won the seat. Abdul Gani of the BNP was elected in 1991 and was re-elected in the February 1996 election. However, in the June 1996 election, independent candidate Makbul Hossain won the seat. Abdul Gani of the BNP was again elected in 2001, while Amzad Hossain of the BNP won the seat in 2008. In the 2014 election, independent candidate Makbul Hossain was elected once more. Shahiduzzaman Khokon of the Awami League won in 2018, and in the most recent 2024 parliamentary election, Awami League candidate Abu Saleh Mohammad Nazmul Haque was elected as the Member of Parliament from this constituency.
