13th National Parliament Elections: Naogaon District
Naogaon district is an administrative region in the northwestern Rajshahi Division of Bangladesh. The district has a total of six parliamentary constituencies. Following the publication of the final list of candidates by the Election Commission for the 13th National Parliament elections, campaigning began across the district from last Thursday (January 22).
Naogaon-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 46): Naogaon-1 constituency comprises Porsha, Sapahar, and Niamatpur Upazilas. The total number of voters is 450,951, including 223,827 male voters, 227,121 female voters, and three transgender voters.
Candidates: Five candidates are contesting in this constituency: Md. Mostafizur Rahman from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP); Md. Mahbubul Alam from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Md. A.H. Shah from Islami Andolan Bangladesh; independent candidate Md. Shalek Chowdhury; and Md. Akbar Ali from the Jatiya Party.
Elected MPs: Azizur Rahman Mia of the Awami League won in 1986. A.K.M. Fazlul Haq of the Jatiya Party was elected in 1988, and Azizur Rahman Mia again won in 1991. Shalek Chowdhury of the BNP won in February and June 1996 and again in 2001. Sadhan Chandra Majumdar of the Awami League was elected in 2008. He continued to win as an Awami League candidate in 2014, 2018, and 2024.
Naogaon-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 47): Naogaon-2 constituency includes Patnitala and Dhamoirhat Upazilas. The total number of voters is 356,137, including 177,574 male voters, 178,562 female voters, and one transgender voter.
Candidates: Three candidates are contesting: Md. Samsujjoha Khan from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; Md. Matibul Islam from Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party); and a third independent candidate.
Elected MPs: Humayun Kabir Chowdhury of the Jatiya Party won in 1986; S.M. Nuruzzaman in 1988; Shahiduzzaman Sarkar of the Awami League in 1991. Shamsujjoha Khan of the BNP won in February and June 1996 and again in 2001. Shahiduzzaman Sarkar of the Awami League won in 2008 and continued to hold the seat in 2014, 2018, and 2024.
Naogaon-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 48): Naogaon-3 constituency comprises Badalgachi and Mahadebpur Upazilas. The total number of voters is 420,907, including 209,694 male voters and 211,213 female voters. No transgender voters are registered.
Candidates: Eight candidates are contesting: Md. Fazle Huda (BNP); Abdullah Al-Mamun Soikot (BNF); Kalipada Sarkar (BSD); Nasir Bin Asgar (Islami Andolan Bangladesh); independent candidates Parvez Arefin Siddiqui and Md. Saddam Hossain; Md. Masud Rana (Jatiya Party); and Md. Mahfuzur Rahman (Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami).
Elected MPs: Md. Baitullah of the Awami League won in 1986. Md. Sujauddoula of the Jatiya Party won in 1988. Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui of the BNP won in 1991 and February and June 1996, and again in 2001. Akram Hossain Chowdhury of the Awami League won in 2008. Independent candidate Shalim Uddin Tarfadar won in 2014, then as an Awami League candidate in 2018. Most recently, Sourendra Nath Chakraborty of the Awami League won in 2024.
Naogaon-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 49): Naogaon-4 constituency includes Manda Upazila. The total number of voters is 319,181, including 158,418 male voters, 160,762 female voters, and one transgender voter.
Candidates: Six candidates are contesting: Md. Abdur Rakib (Jamaat-e-Islami); Sohrab Hossain (Islami Andolan Bangladesh); Ikramul Bari Tipu (BNP); Md. Altaf Hossain (Jatiya Party); Dr. S.M. Fazlur Rahman (Communist Party); and independent candidate Mosa Arfana Begum.
Elected MPs: Muhammad Imaz Uddin Pramanik of the Awami League won in 1986; Kafil Uddin Sonar of the Jatiya Party in 1988; Nasir Uddin of Jamaat-e-Islami in 1991. Shamsul Alam Pramanik of the BNP won in February and June 1996 and again in 2001. Muhammad Imaz Uddin Pramanik, as an independent candidate, won in 2008. He was re-elected as an Awami League candidate in 2014 and 2018. In 2024, S.M. Borhan Sultan Mamud won as an independent candidate.
Naogaon-5 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 50): Naogaon-5 constituency comprises Naogaon Sadar Upazila. The total number of voters is 344,147, including 171,068 male voters, 173,078 female voters, and one transgender voter.
Candidates: Five candidates are contesting: Shafiqul Islam (Communist Party); Abu Sadat Md. Sayem (Jamaat-e-Islami); Md. Zahidul Islam Dhalu (BNP); Md. Abdur Rahman (Islami Andolan Bangladesh); and Md. Anwar Hossain (Jatiya Party).
Elected MPs: Abdul Jalil of the Awami League won in 1986; Abdul Hai of the Jatiya Party in 1988; Shamsuddin Ahmed of the BNP in 1991 and February and June 1996. Abdul Jalil again won in 2001 and 2008. Abdul Malek won the 2013 by-election and 2014 general election as an Awami League candidate. Nizam Uddin Jalil of the Awami League won in 2018 and 2024.
Naogaon-6 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 51): Naogaon-6 constituency comprises Raninagar and Atrai Upazilas. The total number of voters is 327,979, including 165,790 male voters, 162,185 female voters, and four transgender voters.
Candidates: Five candidates are contesting: Sheikh Md. Rezaul Islam (BNP); Atikur Rahman Ratan Molla (Bangladesh Republican Party – BRP); Md. Rafiqul Islam (Islami Andolan Bangladesh); Md. Khobirul Islam (Jamaat-e-Islami); and independent candidate Almgeer Kabir.
Elected MPs: Ohidur Rahman of the Communist Party won in 1986; Molla Rezaul Islam of the Jatiya Party in 1988; Almgeer Kabir of the BNP in 1991. Israfill Alam of the Awami League won in 2008. Anwar Hossain Helal of the Awami League won the 2020 by-election. In the most recent 2024 election, independent candidate Omar Faruk Sumon won.
