13th National Parliament Elections: Pabna District
In the electoral field of Pabna district, the BNP and Awami League are almost evenly matched. This was evident from the results of the relatively transparent elections held in the country in recent years (except the last three elections). However, since the Awami League is not contesting this time, the district’s voting dynamics have changed. Let’s take a look at the picture of the 13th parliamentary elections in the five constituencies of Pabna district.
Pabna-1 ( Parliament Constituency No. 68): This constituency consists of Santhia Upazila of Pabna district.
Candidates: Four candidates are contesting in Pabna-1. They include Md. Abdul Gani from Islami Andolon Bangladesh, Mohammad Nazibur Rahman from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Professor Abu Saiyed as an independent, and Md. Shamsur Rahman from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Elected MPs: In Pabna-1, Matiur Rahman Nizami from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was elected in 1991, Abu Saiyed from Awami League in 1996, Matiur Rahman Nizami from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in 2001, and Shamsul Haq Tuku from Awami League in 2008.
Pabna-2 ( Parliament Constituency No. 69): This constituency consists of Sujanagar Upazila and Bera Upazila.
Candidates: Five candidates are contesting in Pabna-2. They include Sheikh Nasir Uddin Sheikh from Gana Forum, Md. Mehedi Hasan Rubel from Jatiya Party, Md. Hesab Uddin from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Md. Afzal Hossain Khan from Islami Andolon Bangladesh, and A.K.M. Selim Reza Habib from BNP.
Elected MPs: In Pabna-2, Osman Gani Khan from BNP was elected in 1991, Ahmed Tafiz Uddin from Awami League in 1996, Abdul Karim Khandakar from Awami League in the 1998 by-election, A.K.M. Selim Reza Habib from BNP in 2001, and Abdul Karim Khandakar from Awami League in 2008.
Pabna-3 (Parliament Constituency No. 70): This constituency consists of Chatmohar Upazila, Bhangura Upazila, and Faridpur Upazila.
Candidates: Eight candidates are contesting in Pabna-3. They include K.M. Anwarul Islam as an independent with the horse symbol, Md. Hasanul Islam from Gana Adhikar Parishad (GOP) with the truck symbol, Md. Abdul Khalek from Islami Andolon Bangladesh with the hand fan symbol, Md. Mahbubur Rahman Joy Chowdhury from Bangladesh Supreme Party (BSP) with the ektara symbol, Muhammad Ali Asgar from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with the scale symbol, Md. Hasan Zafir Tuhin from BNP with the paddy sheaf symbol, Sardar Asha Parvez from Gana Forum with the rising sun symbol, and Mir Nadim Md. Dably from Jatiya Party with the plough symbol.
Elected MPs: In Pabna-3, Wazi Uddin Khan from Awami League was elected in 1986, Saiful Azam from BNP in 1991, Wazi Uddin Khan from Awami League in 1996, K.M. Anwarul Islam from BNP in 2001, and Mokbul Hossain from Awami League in 2008.
Pabna-4 ( Parliament Constituency No. 71): This constituency consists of Atghoria Upazila and Ishwardi Upazila.
Candidates: Seven candidates are contesting in Pabna-4. They include Md. Sohag Hosen from Bangladesh Communist Party with the hammer symbol, Md. Zakaria Pintu as an independent with the motorcycle symbol, Shahnaz Haque from Nagorik Oikya with the kettle symbol, Md. Saiful Azad Malik from Jatiya Party with the plough symbol, Md. Abu Taleb Mondol from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with the scale symbol, Md. Habibur Rahman (Habib) from BNP with the paddy sheaf symbol, and Md. Anwar Shah from Islami Andolon Bangladesh with the hand fan symbol.
Elected MPs: In Pabna-4, Punjab Ali Biswas from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) was elected in 1986, Sirajul Islam Sardar from BNP in 1991, Shamsur Rahman Sharif from Awami League in 1996, 2001, and 2008.
Pabna-5 ( Parliament Constituency No. 72): This constituency consists of Pabna Sadar Upazila.
Candidates: Four candidates are contesting in Pabna-5. They include Nazmul Hossain from Islami Andolon Bangladesh with the hand fan symbol, Md. Shamsur Rahman Shimul from BNP with the paddy sheaf symbol, Md. Iqbal Hossain from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with the scale symbol, and Md. Abdul Majid Molla from Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) with the eagle symbol.
Elected MPs: In Pabna-5, Rafiqul Islam Bakul from Awami League was elected in 1986, Abdus Subhan from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in 1991, Rafiqul Islam Bakul from BNP in 1996, Majhar Ali Kaderi from Awami League in the 2000 by-election, Abdus Subhan from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in 2001, and Golam Faruk Khandakar Prince from Awami League in 2008.
