13th National Parliament Elections: Sherpur District
In Sherpur district, the voting base has historically been nearly evenly split between the Awami League and BNP, as seen in the results of most national elections, except the last three. However, in the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections, the absence of the Awami League has altered the electoral dynamics. This time, the contest is expected mainly between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami. Below is an overview of the three parliamentary constituencies in Sherpur district.
Sherpur-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 143): Sherpur-1 constituency comprises Sherpur Sadar Upazila. The total number of registered voters is 450,489, including 224,472 male voters, 226,009 female voters, and 8 hijra voters.
Candidates: Six candidates are contesting in this constituency: Md. Shafikul Islam Masud (independent – motorcycle), Md. Likhan Mia of National Citizens Party (NCP – water lily), Md. Ilias Uddin of Jatiya Party (cup-and-pan), Md. Rashedul Islam Rashed of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Sansila Zebrin of BNP (sheaf of paddy), and Md. Mahmudul Haq Moni of Jatiya Party (plough).
Elected MPs: In 1991, Shah Rafiqur Bari Chowdhury of Jatiya Party was elected. Atiur Rahman Atik of Awami League won in June 1996 and again in 2001. He was also elected in 2008.
Sherpur-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 144): Sherpur-2 constituency comprises Nakla Upazila and Nalitabari Upazila. The total number of registered voters is 440,035, including 215,786 male voters and 224,249 female voters. There are no hijra voters.
Candidates: Four candidates are contesting in this constituency: Md. Fahim Chowdhury of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md. Abdullah Al Kayes of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), Md. Golam Kibria of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), and Md. Abdullah of Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party – eagle).
Elected MPs: Matia Chowdhury of Awami League was elected in 1991 and June 1996. In 2001, Zahed Ali Chowdhury of BNP won the seat. Matia Chowdhury returned as MP in 2008.
Sherpur-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 145): Sherpur-3 constituency comprises Sreebardi Upazila and Jhenaigati Upazila. The total number of registered voters is 413,377, including 205,077 male voters, 208,293 female voters, and 7 hijra voters.
Candidates: Five candidates are contesting in this constituency: Md. Nuruzzaman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scales), Md. Mahmudul Haq Rubel of BNP (sheaf of paddy), Md. Aminul Islam (independent – motorcycle), Md. Mizanur Rahman of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist – scissors), and Abu Taleb Md. Saifuddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan).
Elected MPs: Serajul Haq of BNP was elected in 1991. In June 1996, M A Bari of Awami League won. Md. Mahmudul Haq Rubel of BNP won in 2001, and A K M Fazlul Haq of Awami League was elected in 2008.
