13th National Parliament Elections: Thakurgaon District

Thakurgaon is an ancient and traditional town in Bangladesh. Thakurgaon district, bordering India in the northwestern region, is part of Rangpur division. The district has three National Parliament seats. After the Election Commission published the final list of candidates for the 13th National Parliament election, the election campaign has started in the entire district since Thursday (January 22).

Thakurgaon-1 (National Parliament seat number-3): Thakurgaon-1 constituency consists of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila of Thakurgaon district. There are a total of 4,80,609 voters in this constituency. Out of these, 2,40,983 are male voters, 2,39,622 are female voters and 4 Hijra voters.

Candidates: Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is contesting from this seat. Delwar Hossain from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Md. Khademul Islam from Islami Andolon Bangladesh.

Elected MPs: Md. Khademul Islam from the Jatiya Party in 1986, Md. Khademul Islam from the Bangladesh Awami League in 1991 and 1996, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in 2001 and Ramesh Chandra Sen from the Bangladesh Awami League in 2008.

Thakurgaon-2 (National Parliament seat number-4): Thakurgaon-2 constituency consists of Baliadangi upazila, Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon district and Dharmagarh and Kashipur unions of Ranishankail upazila. There are a total of 3,40,049 voters in this constituency. Out of these, 1,75,232 are male voters, 1,64,816 are female voters and one transgender voter.

Candidates: Md. Abdus Salam from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Md. Abdul Hakim from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Sahabuddin Ahmed from Communist Party of Bangladesh, Md. Nahid-Rana from Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), Md. Rezaul Karim from Islami Andolon Bangladesh, Nurun Nahar Begum from Jatiya Party, Md. Faruk Hossain from Gana Adhikar Parishad and Md. Zulfikar Mortuza Chowdhury.

Elected MPs: Dabirul Islam from the Communist Party of Bangladesh in 1986, 1991. He later changed party and became a member of parliament from the Bangladesh Awami League in 1996 and 2008.

Thakurgaon-3 (National Parliament seat number-5): Thakurgaon-3 constituency consists of Pirganj Upazila of Thakurgaon district and Ranishankail Municipality and Ranishankail Upazila. This constituency has a total of 3,44,360 voters. Out of these, 1,74,970 are male and 1,69,390 are female voters.

Candidates: Md. Zahidur Rahman from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Md. Mizanur Rahman from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed from Jatiya Party, Kamala Kanta Roy from Bangladesh Minority Janata Party (BMJP), Probhat Sameer Shahjahan Alam from Communist Party of Bangladesh, Al Amin from Islami Andolan Bangladesh, SM Khalilur Rahman Sarkar from Bangladesh Muslim League, Md. Mamunur Rashid Mamun from Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP), independent Md. Asha Moni and Md. Abul Kalam Azad from Bangladesh Supreme Party.

Elected MPs: Mohammad Shahidullah from the Communist Party of Bangladesh in 1986, Moklesur Rahman from the Bangladesh Awami League in 1991, Emdadul Haque from Bangladesh Awami League in 1996, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed from the Jatiya Party (Ershad) in 2001 and 2008.
