13th National Parliamentary Election: Brahmanbaria District

The electoral contest in Brahmanbaria district has become highly competitive this time. With the Awami League not participating in the election, voters in the district are recalculating their choices. Although the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election is expected to witness competition mainly between BNP and Jamaat candidates, the Jatiya Party may also emerge as a surprise contender. Let us take a closer look at the electoral scenario in the six constituencies of Brahmanbaria district.

Brahmanbaria-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 243):
Brahmanbaria-1 consists of Nasirnagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 275,629, including 146,269 male, 129,357 female, and 3 third-gender voters.

Candidates:
A total of eight candidates are contesting in this constituency. Iqbal Chowdhury is contesting as an independent candidate with the Banana Bunch symbol. A. K. M. Kamruzzaman is contesting as an independent candidate with the Horse symbol. Md. Sharif Mridha is contesting from Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh with the Apple symbol. Hossain Ahmed is contesting from Islami Andolon Bangladesh with the Hand Fan symbol. A. K. M. Aminul Islam is contesting from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with the Scales symbol. Md. Shah Alam is contesting from Jatiya Party with the Plough symbol. Md. Habibur Rahman is contesting as an independent candidate with the Duck symbol. M. A. Hannan is contesting from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol.

Previous Results:
In 1991, Murshed Kamal was elected from Jatiya Party (Ershad). In June 1996, Mohammad Sayedul Haque was elected as Member of Parliament from the Bangladesh Awami League. Mohammad Sayedul Haque was re-elected from the Awami League in both 2001 and 2008.

Brahmanbaria-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 244):
Brahmanbaria-2 consists of Sarail Upazila and Ashuganj Upazila of Brahmanbaria district. The total number of voters in this constituency is 499,448, including 265,245 male, 234,201 female, and 2 third-gender voters.

Candidates:
A total of nine candidates are contesting in this constituency. Advocate Md. Ziaul Haque Mridha is contesting from Jatiya Party with the Plough symbol. S. N. Tarun Dey is contesting as an independent candidate with the Banana Bunch symbol. Taimur Reza Md. Shahjad is contesting from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) with the Star symbol. Nesar Ahmed is contesting from Islami Andolon Bangladesh with the Hand Fan symbol. Sharifa Akter is contesting from Amjanata Party with the Butterfly symbol. Ashraf Uddin is contesting from National Citizen Party (NCP) with the Water Lily Bud symbol. Md. Main Uddin is contesting from Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh with the Apple symbol. Brahmanbaria-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 245):
Brahmanbaria-3 consists of Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila and Bijoynagar Upazila. The total number of voters in this constituency is 624,601, including 328,182 male and 296,419 female voters. There are no third-gender voters in this constituency.

A total of seven candidates are contesting in this constituency. Ataullah is contesting from National Citizen Party (NCP) with the Water Lily Bud symbol. Md. Abu Hanif is contesting from Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh with the Apple symbol. Niazul Karim is contesting from Islami Andolon Bangladesh with the Hand Fan symbol. Md. Omar Yusuf Khan is contesting as an independent candidate with the Deer symbol. Md. Rezaul Islam Bhuiyan is contesting from Jatiya Party with the Plough symbol. Md. Khaled Hossain Mahbub is contesting from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol. Ayesha Akter is contesting from Islamic Front Bangladesh with the Chair symbol.

Previous Results:
In 1991, Harun Al Rashid was elected from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). In June 1996, Harun Al Rashid was re-elected from BNP. He was again elected from BNP in 2001. In 2008, Lutfool Hai Sacchu was elected from the Bangladesh Awami League.

Brahmanbaria-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 246):
Brahmanbaria-4 consists of Kasba Upazila and Akhaura Upazila. The total number of voters in this constituency is 443,909, including 230,647 male, 213,256 female, and 6 third-gender voters.

Candidates:
A total of seven candidates are contesting in this constituency. Md. Jasim is contesting from Islami Andolon Bangladesh with the Hand Fan symbol. Md. Jahirul Haque Chowdhury is contesting from Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP) with the Truck symbol. Rafi Uddin is contesting from Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh with the Apple symbol. Mushfiqur Rahman is contesting from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol. Shaheen Khan is contesting from National Peoples Party (NPP) with the Mango symbol. Md. Brahmanbaria-5 consists of Nabinagar Upazila. The total number of voters in this constituency is 474,826, including 248,737 male, 226,085 female, and 4 third-gender voters.

Brahmanbaria-6 consists of Bancharampur Upazila and Barakandi and Chalimanganj unions of Nabinagar Upazila. The total number of voters in this constituency is 289,674, including 147,260 male, 142,413 female, and 1 third-gender voter.

A total of ten candidates are contesting in this constituency. Md. Mohsin is contesting from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with the Scales symbol. Md. Shafiqul Islam is contesting from National Peoples Party (NPP) with the Mango symbol. Saiduddin Khan is contesting from Islami Andolon Bangladesh with the Hand Fan symbol. Md.
