13th National Parliamentary Election: Habiganj District
Habiganj district has long been a competitive area in national parliamentary elections. Various constituencies have seen contests between the Awami League, BNP, and smaller parties. However, in the upcoming 13th parliamentary election, the electoral scene has changed, as multiple parties and independent candidates are vying strongly in each constituency. Here’s an overview of the four parliamentary constituencies in Habiganj district.
Habiganj-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 239): Habiganj-1 comprises Nabiganj Upazila and Bahubal Upazila. The total number of voters is 466,921, including 236,576 male, 230,340 female, and 5 third-gender voters.
Candidates: A total of five candidates are contesting. Mohammad Badrur Reza is contesting with the Chair symbol from Islamic Front Bangladesh. Kazi Tofayel Ahmed is contesting with the Car symbol from Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD). Reza Kibria is contesting with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol from BNP. Maulana Sirajul Islam is contesting with the Rickshaw symbol from Khelafat Majlis. Sheikh Sujat Mia is contesting as an independent candidate with the Horse symbol.
Previous Results: In 1991, the seat was won by Jatiya Party candidate Khalilur Rahman Chowdhury. In June 1996, Awami League candidate Dewan Farid Gazi was elected. He retained the seat in 2001 and 2008.
Habiganj-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 240): Habiganj-2 comprises Azmiriganj Upazila and Baniachang Upazila. The total number of voters is 394,756, including 200,162 male, 194,590 female, and 4 third-gender voters.
Candidates: A total of five candidates are contesting. Abdul Bachit Azad is contesting with the Wall Clock symbol from Khelafat Majlis. Abdul Muktaadir Chowdhury is contesting with the Plough symbol from Jatiya Party. Lukman Ahmed Talukdar is contesting with the Hoe symbol from Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BASAD). Afsar Ahmed is contesting as an independent candidate with the Football symbol. Abu Monsur Sakhawat Hasan is contesting with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol from BNP.
Previous Results: In 1991 and June 1996, Awami League candidate Sharif Uddin Ahmed was elected. In the 1997 by-election, Awami League candidate Suranjit Sen Gupta won. In 2001 and 2008, Abdul Majid Khan of Awami League was elected.
Habiganj-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 241): Habiganj-3 comprises Habiganj Sadar, Lakhai, and Shayestaganj Upazilas. The total number of voters is 419,573, including 213,298 male, 206,262 female, and 13 third-gender voters.
Candidates: A total of six candidates are contesting. Md. Shahinur Rahman is contesting with the Stick symbol from Bangladesh Sangskritik Muktijot (Muktijot). Kazi Mohsin Ahmed is contesting with the Scales symbol from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. S. M. Sarwar is contesting with the Candle symbol from Bangladesh Islami Front. Mohib Uddin Ahmed Sohel is contesting with the Hand Fan symbol from Islami Andolon Bangladesh. Abdul Mumin Chowdhury is contesting with the Plough symbol from Jatiya Party. Alhaj Md. G. K. Gaus is contesting with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol from BNP.
Previous Results: In 1991 and 1996, Jatiya Party candidate Abu Leish Md. Mubin Chowdhury won. In 2001, Awami League candidate Shah A. M. S. Kibria was elected. In the 2005 by-election, Abu Leish Md. Mubin Chowdhury of BNP won. In 2008, Awami League candidate Abu Jahir won.
Habiganj-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 242): Habiganj-4 comprises Chunarughat Upazila and Madhabpur Upazila. The total number of voters is 552,711, including 278,660 male, 274,049 female, and 2 third-gender voters.
Candidates: A total of nine candidates are contesting. Md. Rashedul Islam Khokon is contesting with the Stick symbol from Bangladesh Sangskritik Muktijot. Md. Gias Uddin is contesting with the Candle symbol from Bangladesh Islami Front. Md. Mujibur Rahman is contesting with the Hoe symbol from BASAD. Md. Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury is contesting as an independent candidate with the Horse symbol. S. M. Faisal is contesting with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol from BNP. Saleh Ahmed Sajan is contesting as an independent candidate with the Football symbol. Shah Md. Al Amin is contesting with the Hurricane symbol from Bangladesh Muslim League. Md. Rezaul Mostofa is contesting with the Apple symbol from Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh. Ahmad Abdul Kader is contesting with the Wall Clock symbol from Khelafat Majlis.
Previous Results: In 1991, Awami League candidate Enamul Haque Mostofa Shahid was elected. In February 1996, BNP candidate Syed Mohammad Faisal won. In June 1996, Enamul Haque Mostofa Shahid regained the seat. He was re-elected in 2001 and 2008 as an Awami League candidate.
