13th National Parliamentary Election: Patuakhali District

In Patuakhali, the Awami League and the BNP have traditionally enjoyed almost equal strength on the electoral field. This pattern has been evident in the results of most national elections held in the past (excluding the last three elections). However, with the Awami League absent from the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election, the electoral landscape of Patuakhali has shifted. This time, the main contest in the district is expected to be between the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami. Below is an overview of the four parliamentary constituencies in Patuakhali district.

Patuakhali-1 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 111):
 Patuakhali-1 comprises Mirzaganj Upazila, Dumki Upazila, and Patuakhali Sadar Upazila. The constituency has a total of 505,840 voters, including 254,339 male voters and 251,493 female voters. There are also eight transgender voters.

Candidates: Six candidates are contesting in this constituency. Altaf Hossain Chowdhury is running from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol. Md Firoz Alam of Islami Andolan Bangladesh is contesting with the Hand Fan symbol. Goutam Chandra Shil from Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Bangladesh JASAD) is running with the Motor Car symbol. Md Shahidul Islam Fahim of Gano Odhikar Parishad (GOP) is contesting with the Truck symbol. Md Abdul Ohab from Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) is running with the Eagle symbol. Jatiya Party candidate A Mannan Hawladar is contesting with the Plough symbol.

Elected MPs : In the 1991 parliamentary election, Md Keramat Ali of the BNP was elected. In June 1996, Shahjahan Mia of the Awami League won the seat. Altaf Hossain Chowdhury returned to parliament in 2001 as a BNP candidate. According to the latest available information, Shahjahan Mia of the Awami League won the seat again in the 2008 election.

Patuakhali-2 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 112): Patuakhali-2 consists solely of Bauphal Upazila. The constituency has a total of 315,282 voters, including 160,501 male voters and 154,779 female voters. There are two transgender voters.

Candidates: Five candidates are contesting in this constituency. Md Shafiqul Islam of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is running with the Scales symbol. Malek Hossain of Islami Andolan Bangladesh is contesting with the Hand Fan symbol. Md Ruhul Amin from Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) is running with the Eagle symbol. Md Habibur Rahman of Gano Odhikar Parishad (GOP) is contesting with the Truck symbol. Md Shahidul Alam Talukdar is contesting from the BNP with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol.

Elected MPs: In 1991, A S M Firoz of the Awami League was elected from this constituency. He retained the seat in the June 1996 election. In 2001, Shahidul Alam Talukdar of the BNP won the seat. According to available data, A S M Firoz of the Awami League reclaimed the seat in the 2008 election.

Patuakhali-3 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 113): Patuakhali-3 comprises Dashmina Upazila and Galachipa Upazila. The constituency has a total of 375,871 voters, including 189,020 male voters and 186,848 female voters. There are three transgender voters.

Candidates: Four candidates are contesting in this constituency. Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Muhammad Shah Alam is running with the Scales symbol. Md Nurul Haque of Gano Odhikar Parishad (GOP) is contesting with the Truck symbol. Independent candidate Md Hasan Mamun is running with the Horse symbol. Md Abu Bakar Siddiqui of Islami Andolan Bangladesh is contesting with the Hand Fan symbol.

Elected MPs : In the 1991 parliamentary election, A K M Jahangir Hossain of the Awami League was elected. He retained the seat in the June 1996 election. According to the latest available information, Ghulam Maula Rony of the Awami League was elected from this constituency in the 2008 election.

Patuakhali-4 (Parliamentary Constituency No. 114): Patuakhali-4 consists of Rangabali Upazila and Kalapara Upazila. The constituency has a total of 312,603 voters, including 158,123 male voters and 154,475 female voters. There are five transgender voters.

Candidates: Four candidates are contesting in this constituency. Mostafizur Rahman of Islami Andolan Bangladesh is running with the Hand Fan symbol. A B M Mosharraf Hossain of the BNP is contesting with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol. Dr Zahir Uddin Ahmed of Khelafat Majlish is running with the Wall Clock symbol. Md Rabiul Hasan of Gano Odhikar Parishad (GOP) is contesting with the Truck symbol.

Elected MPs : In the 1991 parliamentary election, Anwarul Islam of the Awami League was elected from this constituency. He retained the seat again in the June 1996 election.
