15 Awami League activists arrested in Chattogram over gathering for discussion

Police have arrested 15 leaders and activists, including five women leaders, of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations in Chattogram's Mansurabad area over allegations of gathering for discussion on the occasion of August 15.

The arrests were made in drives conducted from 3:30pm to 7pm on Saturday, August 15. Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) confirmed the matter in a press release on Saturday afternoon.

Double Mooring Police said they raided a building after receiving information that AL and affiliated leaders and activists had gathered there for discussion on August 15, resulting in the arrest of 15 individuals.

Among those arrested are Advocate Umme Habiba, central executive committee member of Bangladesh Krishak League and Chattogram District Council member; Md Iskandar Mirza, office affairs secretary of Halishahar Thana AL; Shubh Aich, religious affairs secretary of CMP's Bangabandhu Parishad; Kamela Khanam Rupa, former vice-chairman of Chandanaish upazila and joint convener of Chattogram South District Jubo Mohila League; Sujla Antara, member of CMP Mohila AL; and Sharmina Yasmin Nishu, former women affairs secretary of Bangabandhu Parishad.

Others arrested include Sanjay Kanti Nath, SM Salahuddin, Ahsan Abid, Sultan Mahmud Zidan, Partha Pratim Nandi, Jishu Roy Chowdhury, Mashiur Rahman Abir, Ayesha Haven and Mohammad Zakir Hossain.

Police said a case has been filed against them at Double Mooring Police Station. They were produced in court after interrogation.
