16 injured in Awami League-BNP clash in Jhenaidah

At least 16 people were injured in a clash between supporters of Awami League and BNP in Harinakundu upazila, Jhenaidah, on Saturday morning, June 20. The clash erupted over previous enmity and dominance in the area. Some of the injured were in critical condition and were admitted to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital and Kushtia Medical College Hospital.

The incident took place in the Boalia village of Falsi union.

The injured were identified as Chhanoar Hossain Chhono, 55; Mizan Ali, 45; Bibhan Ali, 22; Jhantu Mia, 45; Matiar Rahman, 50; Akhter Molla, 32; Rashidul Islam, 35; Borkat Molla, 40; Fentu Mia, 50; Moshiar Member, 42; Tozibar Molla, 65; Kabir Mondol, 30; Rubel Mondol, 32; Kabul, 40; Tota Mia, 34; Nur Ali, 54; and Bachchu Mia, 32.

According to local sources, tensions had been brewing in Boalia village over political influence and previous enmity for a long time. On Saturday morning, an argument broke out between supporters of Union Parishad Chairman Bazolur Rahman and followers of former UP member Moshiar Rahman, who is backed by BNP. At one point, both sides engaged in a clash with local weapons.

At least 16 people were injured in the clash. Locals rescued the injured and admitted them to Harinakundu Upazila Health Complex and Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital. Five of the seriously injured were transferred to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital and three others were shifted to Kushtia Medical College Hospital.

Former UP member Moshiar Rahman alleged that chairman's supporters attacked their followers over a trivial matter, injuring at least seven of them.

Chairman Bazolur Rahman could not be reached for comment.

Harinakundu Police Station Investigation Officer (OC Investigation) Asit Kumar Roy said police visited the spot and brought the situation under control. No written complaint has been received from any side so far. Additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain normalcy.
