16 JU students suspended over ragging allegation
Jahangirnagar University (JU) has temporarily suspended 16 students from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology over allegations of ragging their juniors.
The action was announced in an office order issued by the Registrar’s Office on Monday (October 13) evening, following the directive of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan under Section 4(1)(b) of the JU Student Discipline Ordinance, 2018.
A three-member inquiry committee headed by Prof. Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman, Provost of Maulana Bhasani Hall, has been formed to investigate the incident. The other members are Assistant Proctor Dr. Md. Al-Amin Khan and Deputy Registrar (Higher Education & Scholarship) Lutfur Rahman Arif, who will serve as member secretary.
The committee has been asked to submit its report with recommendations within 21 working days.
According to reports, the ragging took place around 10:30pm on Sunday (October 12) in Room 403 of the 21st Hall, where students of the 53rd batch allegedly harassed several freshmen of the 54th batch.
University journalists, hall guards, and student leaders later rescued the victims.
The suspended students are: Tanvir Rahman Mun, Abdullah Al Fahad, Abdullah Al Sayed, Abu Talha Roni, Rajib Sheikh, S.M. Mahamudunnabi, Abu Sayed, Jannatul Adon, Ahmed Arefin Ratul, Tasnimul Hasan Jubayer, Mahamudul Hasan Fuad, Al Hasib, Abdullah Al Noman, Rakibul Hasan Nibir, Zahidul Islam, and Ushanto Tripura.
