15 killed, 10 others injured as rod-laden truck overturns in Tangail
At least fifteen people were killed and around 10 others injured after a rod-laden truck overturned on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Tangail’s Kalihati upazila.
The deadly accident took place around 4:30am near the Saratail area on the eastern approach road of the Jamuna Bridge early Monday morning (May 25).
Police, fire service personnel, and local rescuers rushed to the scene immediately after the crash and launched rescue operations.
The injured were rescued and taken to Tangail General Hospital for treatment, while several of them were reported to be in critical condition.
Authorities fear the death toll may rise further.
According to police, the truck was travelling from Dhaka towards northern Bangladesh carrying passengers along with iron rods when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn beside the highway.
Preliminary investigations suggest that overspeeding or a possible mechanical failure may have caused the accident.
Fuad Rohani, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jamuna Bridge East Police Station confirmed the incident and said 15 people died on the spot.
"Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the crash, while efforts are continuing to identify the victims," he added.
