19,000 dengue detection kits arrive from China
Chinese government has delivered 19,000 advanced combo kits to Bangladesh to aid in dengue detection. These kits can simultaneously test for NS1, IgG, and IgM markers, enhancing early diagnosis and response.
The kits were officially handed over at a ceremony held on Thursday (July 3) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in Mohakhali, Dhaka.
Speaking at the event, Dr Md Sayedur Rahman, special assistant professor at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said the dengue situation in the country is currently under control. He noted that the DGHS is rapidly dispatching specialist doctors, ambulances, and diagnostic kits to areas most affected by the disease.
"These combo kits from China are part of the government's ongoing effort to ensure swift response and adequate preparedness," he said.
Dr. Rahman emphasized the importance of vector control programmes and public awareness in tackling dengue. He also warned that delays in seeking treatment can lead to complications, as several viruses—including dengue, chikungunya, and influenza—are currently spreading.
"We have sufficient testing kits. If needed, we will bring more. But awareness and early detection are crucial," he added.
He also highlighted the government's broader commitment to strengthening the health sector. "This interim government is prioritizing health like never before. Our cooperation with China is expanding beyond test kits and vaccines to include infrastructure development, medical equipment, vaccine production, and robotics. These initiatives will take time to materialise, but the foundation is being laid."
The event was chaired by DGHS Director General Professor Dr Md Abu Zafar and was attended by Liu Yuyin, deputy mission chief of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh, along with other senior officials.
