190-kg Vishnu idol recovered in Bogura, 2 held

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has recovered a 190-kilogram Vishnu idol buried beneath the floor of a house in Sherpur upaazila of Bogura. Two individuals were held in connection with the incident.

The idol measures 57 inches in length and 24 inches in width. On Monday morning, both the arrested suspects and the idol were handed over to Sherpur police station for further investigation.

Delwar Hossain, Warrant Officer of RAB-12 in Bogura, filed a written complaint with Sherpur police, valuing the recovered idol at approximately Tk 2 crore.

The arrested have been identified as Abul Bashar (55) of Shahbandegi Union, Sherpur Upazila, Bogura, and Al Amin Sarkar (48) from Rangalia area, Sirajganj.

According to Officer Hossain, the idol was confirmed to be made of precious stone after being examined at a jewelry workshop. It was initially discovered by Abul Bashar during pond excavation in Amin village, Kusumbi Union, Sherpur. Subsequently, the idol was concealed beneath the floor of a tin shed near the pond.

Authorities believe the idol was being prepared for smuggling abroad.

Sherpur Police Inspector (Investigation) Zainul Abedin confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated.
