2 Bangladeshis injured in BSF firing on Satkhira border
Two Bangladeshis have been injured in firing by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in the Basantpur border area of Kaliganj upazila in Satkhira.
The incident took place around 2am in the Kalindi river area adjacent to the border on Tuesday (June 2). The injured two are Md. Mohiuddin, 42, son of Md. Golam Rabbani of Shitalpur village of Kaliganj upazila, and Md. Shaheen, 28, son of the deceased Ali Sardar of Khajer.
According to police and local sources, the two men illegally entered India from Bangladesh about a year ago. Later, they went to Tamil Nadu state of India via Howrah in Kolkata and were working as masons. They tried to return to the country illegally between 2am and 2.30am on Tuesday.
According to the sources, BSF members opened fire on them while they were swimming across the Kalindi river in the Banshjharia area adjacent to the Basantpur border and entering Bangladesh. Both were shot. Later, local people rescued them and admitted them to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex around 3:15am. After receiving primary treatment there, the doctors sent them to Satkhira Sadar Hospital as their condition deteriorated.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station Jewel Hossain said, initially it was learned that they had gone to India illegally and were similarly shot by the BSF while returning home. After receiving the information, the police visited the scene. Since the condition of the two injured was serious, they were sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Ashiqur Rahman, commander of Satkhira-33 BGB Battalion, told the media that in addition to 33 and 17 BGBs, Riverine BGBs are working inside the Sundarbans along the long border of Satkhira. The exact area where the two injured were shot is being investigated.
