2 BIWTA officials suspended for bribery

Two officials of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) have been suspended for accepting bribes in exchange for fuel oil contract work at the Naval Conservation and Operation Department.

Those suspended include Md. Abdur Rahim, Additional Director (Marine) of BIWTA’s Naval Conservation and Operation Department, and Deputy Director Md. Obaidul Karim Khan.

The Ministry of Shipping confirmed this through a notification on Wednesday (September 10).

A bribery incident concerning the awarding of fuel oil contracts in BIWTA’s Naval Conservation and Operations Department has come to the attention of the Ministry of Shipping, the notification read.

In response, the Ministry of Shipping, following the orders of Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain, has temporarily suspended Md. Abdur Rahim and Md. Obaidul Karim Khan.

Additionally, an probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident and uncover the truth.

Departmental action will be taken against the officials involved, and instructions have been issued to pursue legal action against others implicated.
