2 bodies recovered from Maheshpur border area within 72 hours
Police have recovered two bodies from the Ichamati River in the Maheshpur border area of Jhenaidah within a span of 72 hours, raising concerns in the border region.
According to officials, the body of a young man, later identified as Ratikanta Joydhar, 46, was found beneath water hyacinth in a decomposed and swollen state on Thursday evening (April 16).
Earlier, another unidentified male body was recovered from the same area on Monday.
Police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) sources said locals detected a strong foul smell and later discovered the body floating under water hyacinth along the riverbank on Thursday evening. They immediately informed the police and BGB.
The body was found approximately 10 metres inside Bangladesh territory from the zero line of the border.
Commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 58 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Rofiqul Alam, said the body was found floating under water hyacinth about 10 yards inside Bangladesh territory and was likely three to four days old.
He added that the body had already begun decomposing and swelling due to being submerged in water for several days.
Maheshpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan said that after an initial inquest, the body would be sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, and legal procedures are underway.
Earlier, another unidentified body was recovered from the same riverbank area during a BGB patrol near the border, approximately 50 metres inside Bangladesh territory on Monday night (April 13). The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed.
