2 including JSD leader Mintu arrested in Mymensingh
In a raid conducted by joint forces have arrested 14-party alliance leaders and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) central leader Councilor Syed Shafiqul Islam Mintu and his nephew Syed Sajal in Mymensingh.
They were arrested with weapons from their homes in the city's Akua area around 11.00pm on Friday (December 27).
The arrestee, Syed Shafiqul Islam Mintu, is the organizing secretary of the JSD (Inu) central committee, president of the Mymensingh Metropolitan Committee, and a former councilor of Ward No. 6 of Mymensingh City Corporation.
Md Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station, confirmed this to Views Bangladesh.
He said: "A case has been filed against Syed Shafiqul Islam Mintu on suspecious of being involved in attacks on students and civilians during the student movement. Based on confidential information, the joint force in a raid arrest him during from his house in Akua, where a shotgun was recovered. His nephew, Syed Sajal, was also taken into custody during the operation."
"Today, the two arrestees were presented in court following a case filed against them. The court subsequently ordered imprisonment for them," he added.
Syed Shafiqul Islam Mintu was initially nominated as the JSD candidate for the Mymensingh-6 (Phulbaria) constituency in the 12th National Parliament election scheduled for January 7 but later withdrew his candidacy. Previously, he contested as an independent candidate in the same constituency during the 2018 parliamentary election but was defeated.
