2 killed in clashes over dominance in Narayanganj
At least two people were killed and seven others injured in a clash between two groups over control of an autorickshaw stand and dominance in Narayanganj's port area.
The incident took place at 9.00pm on Saturday (June 21) in separate areas of the Shahi Mosque and Sirajudaula Club Ground of the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Quddus Mia, a resident of the Hafezibag area, and Mehedi.
According to the locals, the murders excalate from a previous dispute between the supporters of former councilor and expelled BNP leader Hannan Sarkar, Babu-Mehedi, and the supporters of former councilor and joint convener of the metropolitan BNP, Abul Kausar Asha, and the supporters of Roni-Jafar.
On Saturday night, Mehedi's group attacked Jafar's men near the Shahi Mosque, during which Quddus was stabbed to death. Later, around 11:30 PM, Roni and Jafar’s group chased and caught Mehedi near Bandar Sirajuddaula club, beat and stabbed him. He was pronounced dead by the on-duty doctor after being taken to Khanpur 300-bed hospital.
Saiful Islam, inspector (Investigation) of Port Police Station, said, "Quddus and Mehedi were killed in stabbings during a clash between two rival groups over dominance. Their bodies have been recovered and sent to the Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy."
"The situation is currently under control, with police, Detective Branch (DB), and army personnel deployed in the area," he added.
