2 killed in Cox's Bazar bus crash
A child and a bus driver were killed in a head-on collision between two passenger buses in Khutakhali, Chakaria on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway. At least 20 passengers from both buses were injured.
The accident occurred around 4pm in the Medhakachapia area of Khutakhali Union on Monday (June 8).
The deceased were bus driver Mohammad Ali, 25. He is the son of Nurul Islam of Paglirabeel area of Ward No. 2 of Marichcha of Ukhia Upazila. The other is Mohammad Yahi, the 8-month-old son of Manjur Alam, a resident of Phaitong area of Lama Upazila of Bandarban. The police could not confirm the identities of the injured. However, the condition of several of the injured is critical.
According to local and Malumghat Highway Police Station sources, a bus of Chakaria Service Paribahan heading towards Cox's Bazar and a bus of Evergreen Paribahan coming from the opposite direction collided head-on in the Medhakachapia area in the afternoon. Both buses were crushed, resulting in casualties. Upon receiving the information, the Highway Police quickly reached the spot and carried out rescue operations with the help of locals. The injured passengers were sent to Malumghat Memorial Christian Hospital and Chakaria Government Hospital and traffic on the highway was normalized.
Confirming the truth of the accident, Malumghat Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahabubar Rahman said that a child and the bus driver were killed on the spot in the accident in the Medhakachapia area. The two buses involved in the accident have been seized and further legal action will be taken in this regard.
