2 killed, including foreign national, as covered van hits motorcycle in Banani

Two motorcycle riders of a ride-sharing service were killed after being hit by a covered van in the capital's Banani. One of them was a Sierra Leone national named Michael, and the other was Md Khaled Saifullah (38), son of Mohammad Rafiq Ullah of Sonaimuri upazila in Noakhali.

The accident took place on the Dhaka-Mymensingh road on the west side of Banani's Amtali intersection around 11:15pm on Friday, September 25. Police said a speeding covered van hit the motorcycle from behind while it was crossing Amtali intersection. The two riders were thrown onto the road and seriously injured. They died at the scene. After the accident, the covered van driver fled with the vehicle.

Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Tarek said on Saturday noon that the bodies of the two deceased have been kept at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The process of informing the concerned embassy about Michael's death is underway.

Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Salahuddin said Michael worked at the Canadian Trillium International School in Malibagh. He formally left the institution on Friday. He was supposed to return to his own country today. He died in the accident while returning from school on a ride-sharing motorcycle.

A case has been filed under the Road Transport Act over the incident. Police said efforts are underway to identify the covered van and arrest the driver.
