2 shot dead in Jhenaidah

Two people were shot to death in Maheshpur upazila under Jhenaidah district in a reported dispute over smuggling.

The deceased are --Shamim Hossain, 32, son of Shamsul Haque from Baghadanga village and Montu Mia, son of Nayan Mandal of the same village.

Mahabubur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge of Maheshpur Police Station, confirmed the deaths.

One Tariqul Islam, the son of Madhu Mandal and the main accused, is currently on the run.

According to locals, Shamim and Tariqul engaged in an dispute over reported smuggle issue two months ago which led to a legal case. Tariqul was sent to jail but released on bail on January 15.

Hearing the news, Shamim and others attacked Tariqul's residence on Wednesday prompting Tariqul to open fire on them.

Police said both the accused and the victims are involved in smuggling and cases were filed against them earlier.
