Two women who underwent surgery at Nowapara Fatema Private Hospital, have died within a day of the operation in Abhaynagar, Jashore.

On Sunday (February 23) morning, one of the women, Sharmin Begum, 26, passed away while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. She was the wife of Babu Molya from Nehalpur village in Monirampur Upazila.

Reports indicate that on Friday night, February 21, both Sharmin Begum, 26, and Asma Khatun, 32, underwent cesarean operations at Nowapara Fatema Private Hospital. Following the surgeries, both women suffered excessive bleeding. The hospital referred them to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Upon arrival, at around 8:00pm, Asma Khatun passed away.

Asma Khatun was the wife of Shafiqul Islam from Nehalpur village in Monirampur Upazila. Enraged by her death, family members and relatives vandalized and surrounded the hospital in protest.

Meanwhile, as Sharmin Begum’s condition worsened, she was transferred from Khulna Medical College Hospital to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her condition on Sunday afternoon.

Sharmin Begum’s husband, Babu Molya, expressed his grief and frustration, stating, “The doctors at Fatema Hospital killed my wife through a botched operation. Despite all efforts, I couldn't save her. My child is now motherless. I demand justice.”

Similarly, Asma Khatun’s brother, Jasim Uddin, claimed that improper stitching by the doctors led to excessive bleeding, causing her death. “Even after giving her five bags of blood, we couldn’t save her. She died because of a botched surgery,” he said.

Dr. Manjurul Morshed, a doctor at Fatema Hospital, admitted to the deaths but denied allegations of medical malpractice. “It was not due to a faulty operation, but excessive bleeding. That’s why we immediately referred them to Khulna. We never expected such an outcome,” he stated.

Rafiqul Islam Bagha, the owner of Nowapara Fatema Hospital, confirmed the deaths, saying, “One woman passed away on the first day, and I heard about another death this afternoon. We are in discussions with both families.”

Dr. Alimur Rajib, the Health and Family Planning Officer of Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex, said, “We have not yet received any official complaint from the families. I learned about the incident from the media. If a complaint is filed, we will investigate and take action.”

Jashore District Civil Surgeon Dr. Masud Rana stated, “We are aware of the incident. A probe committee will be formed to take necessary action. I will personally conduct inspections at clinics and hospitals in Abhaynagar.”
