2 youths die after drinking methanol at wedding party

Two youths have fallen ill after drinking methanol at a wedding party in Konabari, Gazipur. They died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment on Sunday (July 19). The accused has been absconding since the incident.

The deceased are Sajib, 22, son of Abdul Rezak of Junior Bazar area of ​​Ishwarganj upazila in Mymensingh, and Roni Mia, 20, son of Mostafa Islam of the same upazila. Sajib used to trade in raw materials in Gazipur, while Roni was a student of Ashulia Polytechnic Institute.

According to police and local sources, on the night of July 10, a relative of the groom, Sagar, made them drink methanol, mistaking it for alcohol, at a wedding in the Quader Market area of ​​Bymail. Sajib and Roni fell ill the next day. Initially, they took medicine from a local pharmacy but their condition did not improve, so they were admitted to a clinic. Later, when their physical condition deteriorated, they were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. There, Sajib died on Sunday morning and Roni in the afternoon.

According to the initial information of doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, they died of methanol poisoning.

Rezia Khatun, grandmother of the deceased Roni, claimed that her grandson was not addicted to any kind of drug. He was deliberately made to drink poisonous methanol. She demanded exemplary punishment for those involved in this incident.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police's Konabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Iftekhar Hossain said that accused raw material trader Sagar is absconding after the incident. The process of taking legal action against him is underway.
