2 Zika virus cases detected in Chattogram
For the first time, two cases of the Zika virus have been detected in Chattogram. The Chattogram District Civil Surgeon’s Office confirmed the matter on Tuesday (8 July). The infected individuals are one male and one female.
District Civil Surgeon Dr. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said, “Tests conducted at a private laboratory in the city confirmed the presence of the Zika virus in two individuals. Both patients are currently receiving appropriate treatment and are being closely monitored.”
Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Mohammad Tauhidul Anwar said, “The Zika virus was detected using a combined testing kit from Epic Healthcare that can identify multiple viruses. However, additional tests are required to confirm the results. The infected man is showing symptoms such as fever, pain, and redness, while the woman is experiencing fever, pain, and swelling in her hands and feet.”
According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), there is no specific cure for the Zika virus. Patients are recommended to rest well, stay hydrated, and take medication for fever and pain as directed by a doctor.
Experts note that about 80% of those infected with the Zika virus do not show any symptoms. However, around 20% may experience symptoms such as skin rash, headache, red eyes, and muscle or joint pain. These symptoms typically appear 3 to 12 days after infection and last for 2 to 7 days.
