20 students expelled for life at SUST
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has expelled 20 students for life over their involvement in last year’s campus uprising, attacks on protesting students, and possession of weapons in residential halls. Another 17 students have been expelled for two to four semesters.
The decision was taken at the university’s 237th Syndicate meeting on Saturday (27 August), confirmed Proctor Professor Md Mokhlesur Rahman.
Nineteen students, who had earlier been suspended temporarily, were acquitted due to lack of evidence, while a few others were cautioned.
According to university sources, all of the expelled students were linked to the banned Chhatra League. Of them, 12 were expelled for attacking protesting students, while eight were expelled for storing weapons in halls.
Proctor Professor Mokhlesur Rahman said some students had initially been suspended for alleged involvement with weapons, but verification revealed many had merely shifted items from one room to another. “It would have been unjust to expel them, which is why they were acquitted,” he said.
