22-year-old woman, unborn child dies of dengue

A student of Cumilla Victoria Government College and her unborn child have died of dengue while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in Dhaka.

The deceased, Nur Jahan, 22, was a student of the Bangla Department in the 2023-24 academic session. She was nine months pregnant, according to BMU authorities.

She died around 5:00am while undergoing treatment at the hospital, Prof Md Mashiur Rahman Bhuiyan, head of the Bangla Department at Victoria College, said.

Nur Jahan was from Moshagora village in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla.

Family members said she married Jobayer Hossain, also from the same area, around one and a half years ago.

Her husband said she developed a mild fever last Friday. As she later developed various complications, she was initially treated in Cumilla, but her condition did not improve.

She was subsequently taken to Dhaka for better treatment and admitted to BMU, where she died early today, he said.

Meanwhile, teachers and students of Victoria College expressed deep shock at Nur Jahan’s death.

Victoria College Principal Prof Abul Basar Bhuiyan said, “The untimely death of such a bright student is truly heartbreaking. We pray for the salvation of her departed soul.”

A delegation of college teachers attended Nur Jahan’s namaz-e-janaza held today and expressed condolences to her family.
