25 injured as 6 vehicles collide on Rangpur-Dhaka Highway due to dense fog
At least 25 people were injured when six vehicles collided after losing control in dense fog on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway.
These accidents took place around 7:30am on Saturday (February 1) at the Gorer Matha intersection area on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway in Mithapukur.
The vehicles involved in the accidents include two passenger buses, a truck, a pickup and a covered van.
Earlier, on Friday (January 31), seven people were killed in five separate accidents at various locations, including Pirganj, along the Rangpur-Dhaka highway.
Md. Moniruzzaman, in-charge of Bara Durga Highway Police, said, "Sand and soil trucks travel daily on the accident-prone highway, making the road slippery due to soil spillage. The dense fog likely reduced visibility, causing drivers to lose control and collide. Police initiated rescue operations after the incident."
"The vehicles involved in the accidents have been cleared. No major incidents were reported. Some injured passengers received first aid," he added.
Regarding the matter, the highway police officer advised drivers and passengers to drive slowly and cautiously, ensuring their car headlights are turned on.
Mohammad Tariqul Islam, superintendent of Highway Police Rangpur Region, said, "146 people died in 195 road accidents on national and regional highways in Rangpur in 2024, including 120 men, 22 women, and 4 children."
"I urged drivers to control speed and follow traffic laws to prevent accidents, especially during the winter season’s dense fog," he added.
