A giant 25.5kg katla fish caught in the Padma River in Daulatdia of Rajbari, drew large crowds and fetched a high price at auction on Thursday (April 16).

The fish was netted early morning by fisherman Subrata Halder from Jafarganj using a current net in the Gaya area of the river.

It was later brought to Daulatdia Ferry Ghat No. 5, where local people gathered to catch a glimpse. The fish was sold through an open auction at Tk 1,800 per kg, earning Tk 45,900.

Local trader Chandu Molla purchased it and quickly resold it to a Dhaka-based buyer at Tk 1,900 per kg, making Tk 48,450.

Goaland upazila fisheries officer Anwarul Islam Pilot said big freshwater fish are being caught more frequently in the Padma River, especially using current nets, adding that such fish command high market demand due to their taste.
