28 injured as Chhatra Dal-Chhatra Shibir clash in Barishal
At least 28 people have sustained injuries as the members of Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir locked horn at Muladi Government College in Barishal.
The incident took place on Thursday (September 10) morning.
Some of the injured have been admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal. The rest are being treated locally.
Seriously injured are--Manna, 20, Hamim, 20, Bayezid, 23, Abdullah, 24, and Rakib, 24.
Barishal District Chhatra Shibir President Syed Ahmed said: "Preparations were underway to hold a career guideline programme for first-year honors students on September 23. On this occasion, when the leaders of the district and upazila Chhatra Shibir went to the college, Chhatra Dal leaders and activists launched an attack. At least 20 Shibir members were injured in the incident."
However, Muladi Upazila Chhatra Dal convener Mohiuddin Dhali denied the allegations. He said: "Since the DUCSU elections, Chhatra Dal has been trying to take control of the college. Today, when Tarique Rahman was criticized, our leaders and activists protested."
He claimed that at least eight Chhatra Dal activists were injured.
Jahangir Hossain, a doctor at the emergency department of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said that six injured people have been admitted. They are undergoing treatment in the surgery ward.
Muladi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shafiqul Islam said: "Initially, the situation heated up over a scuffle between two students. Later, the police went and brought the situation under control. The situation is normal now. Effort is underway to identify those involved in the incident."
