29 SUST students expelled for attacking peers during mass uprising
The administration of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has temporarily expelled 29 students for allegedly attacking peers during the anti-discrimination movement in July and August.
The confirmation came in an office order signed by the university's acting registrar after a syndicate meeting on Sunday (January 12).
According to the office order, the temporary expulsion of the 29 students was recommended by the disciplinary board in response to their involvement in what is described as a terrorist attack on anti-discrimination protesters between July 15 and August 5, 2024.
An investigation committee has been established to determine any further disciplinary action, it added.
The expelled students include: Md. Asiful Islam (Anthropology Department, 2021-22); Ilias Sani, Md. Akash Ahme (Anthropology Department, 2020-21); Farhan Hossain Chowdhury (Political Studies Department, 2020-21); Shimul Mia, Durjoy Sarkar Niloy (Political Studies Department, 2021-22); Md. Siam Khan, Sajeeb Chandra Nath (Physics Department, 2019-20); Syed Maj Jardi (Statistics Department, 2021-22); Md. Habibur Rahman Habib (Bangla Department, 2021-22); Moniruzzaman Munna, Mojidul Haque (Bangla Department, 2019-20);
Mohammad Rakibuzzaman (Bangla Department, SUST Branch VP); Md. Nafiuzzaman (Bangla Department, 2021-22); Md. Ismail Hossain (Bangla Department, 2018-19); Yusuf Hossain Titu (Bangla Department, 2017-18); Shuvro Roy Shyam (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department, 2020-21); Md. Lokman Hossain (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2018-19); Maruf Mia (Public Administration Department, 2018-19); Taimur Salehin Taus (English Department, 2020-21); Roufun Jahan (Petroleum and Mining Engineering, 2019-20); Shihab Uddin Mishu, Mozahidul Islam Saimun (Petroleum and Mining Engineering, 2021-22); Redwan Hossain (Economics Department, 2018-19); Khalilur Rahman (Sociology Department, 2012-13); Rezaul Haque (Sociology Department, 2016-17); Maidul Islam (Sociology Department, 2017-18); Tarek Hasan (Sociology Department, 2021); Sajibur Rahman (Sociology Department, 2013-14).
Among those are temporarily expelled, Khalilur Rahman, Sajibur Rahman and Rudra Sen, who are affiliated with the banned Chhatra League's SUST branch, are also implicated in a murder case. They were arrested in October 2023 and are currently being held in Sylhet Central Jail.
