2-day remand for youth arrested in front of JnU

A court has granted a two-day police remand for a youth named Md Monir in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Kotwali Police Station in the capital. He has been shown arrested as a suspect found in the investigation and an active member of the banned Awami League.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid's court gave the remand order on Tuesday, September 22, following a police application. State counsel Harun Or Rashid confirmed the matter.

According to case documents, Monir was initially detained by leaders and activists of Jagannath University Chhatra Dal from in front of the university on September 20. He was later handed over to Kotwali Police Station police.

Subsequently, on Monday, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Ibne Khalid Hossain of Kotwali Police Station, produced Monir before the court and applied for a seven-day remand. The application said the other accused named in the First Information Report (FIR) and found in the investigation had gathered in support of the banned Awami League, Chhatra League and their affiliated organisations and were involved in a conspiracy to carry out anti-government processions, disrupt public safety and create an unstable environment in the country.

The application further said the accused were involved in a conspiracy to undermine the country's sovereignty, alongside carrying out propaganda in support of the banned organisation. Police told the court that Monir needs to be interrogated to uncover the main mystery of the case, identify the identity and addresses of absconding and unnamed accused, and find the financiers and those who gave the orders.

At the hearing, lawyers for the accused applied for the cancellation of the remand. The state opposed it. After hearing both sides, the court granted Monir's two-day police remand.
