3 arrested with pistol over Tk 39 lakh snatch in Dhanmondi

Police have arrested three alleged members of a snatchers’ gang after Tk 39 lakh was snatched from a man carrying money withdrawn from a bank in the Dhanmondi Lake area of Dhaka.

The incident occurred in the Dhanmondi police station area on Sunday (August 31).

Police launched an immediate operation after receiving a call through the national emergency service 999 and arrested the suspects.

Anwar Sattar, police inspector and media and public relations officer at 999, said a caller reported that three men on a motorcycle had snatched a bag containing Tk 39 lakh a victim while he was carrying the money after withdrawing it from a bank.

The victim chased the suspects. At one point, one of the alleged snatchers fell from the motorcycle and was caught by local residents along with a pistol.

Following the 999 alert, Dhanmondi police reached the scene and arrested the suspect, identified as Tanvir Abedin Jewel, with the firearm.

Police later launched a joint operation involving several teams from Dhanmondi Police Station and a Detective Branch team, taking Tanvir along. Two more alleged members of the same gang were subsequently arrested.

Anwar said the 999 call was received by call-taker Constable Mujibur Rahman, while police dispatcher SI Md Zahirul Islam maintained communication with the caller and the relevant police station throughout the operation.

Police are investigating the incident and the involvement of the three suspects in the snatching.
