3 Bangladeshi killed in Tripura after crossing border
Three Bangladeshi citizens were reportedly stabbed to death in India’s Tripura state after allegedly crossing the border from Bangladesh. The victims, residents of Chunarughat Upazila in Habiganj, are currently at the Sampahar Police Station in Khwai district, India.
The deceased have been identified as Juel Mia, 32, son of Ashab Ali from Alinagar village; Pati Mia, 45, son of Kona Mia from Basulla village; and Sojal Mia, 20, son of Kaddus Mia from Kabilashpur village.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Tanzilur Rahman, commander of the 55 BGB (Habiganj Battalion) on Thursday said intelligence reports indicate the three entered India two to three days ago through the border area of Vidyabil in Srimangal Upazila, Moulvibazar. They were reportedly staying about 4–5 kilometers inside Tripura, in the Karengichhara area.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the men had entered India for cattle smuggling. Local residents, suspecting theft, allegedly attacked them collectively, leading to their deaths at the scene.
BGB officials are maintaining communication with the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) to verify details of the incident and are taking measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Tarekur Rahman, a member of the Gazipur Union Parishad in Chunarughat, said BGB collected the victims’ national ID cards and sent them to India. Identification was confirmed from the photographs of the bodies received.
