3 cement-laden trawlers sink in Padma due to storm
Three cement-laden trawlers sank in the Padma River in Naria Upazila of Shariatpur due to a sudden storm. The trawlers were carrying about six thousand bags of cement.
The accident occurred in Mulfatganj area of Naria Upazila on Friday (March 20) afternoon.
Locals and eyewitnesses said that three cement-laden trawlers left Dhaka for Jhalokathi, Indurkani and Gourandi. When they reached the Padma River in Naria at noon, hostile weather suddenly arose. The trawlers lost control due to a strong storm and rough waves. The drivers tried to pull the trawlers to the shore, but all three trawlers sank one by one due to the intensity of the waves.
Fortunately, the drivers and workers on the trawlers were able to swim to the shore. No one was killed.
Abdul Jalil, in-charge of Sureshwar Naval Police Outpost, said, "There have been reports of three trawlers sinking due to the storm. However, all the drivers and workers have safely reached the shore. We have sent police to the spot and further action is being taken."
