3 children drown in water-filled pit while playing in Moulvibazar
Three children have died after falling into a water-filled pit while playing in Kulaura upazila, Moulvibazar. The incident occurred around 12:00 pm on Wednesday, April 1, in Fatiguli village under Karmadha union.
The deceased are Jisan, 13, son of Sipar Mia from Dighalkandi village; Emad, 8, son of Ashik Mia from the adjacent Fatiguli village; and Labib, 7, son of Saheb Ali from the same village.
According to locals and police, the owner of a plot of land had excavated soil from the area, leaving behind a pit measuring seven to eight feet deep. Heavy rainfall on Tuesday night caused hill water from upstream to fill the pit. Around 2:00 pm, several children were playing near the pit with a plastic bottle. When the bottle fell into the pit, Jisan, Emad and Labib entered the water one by one to retrieve it. When they did not resurface after some time, other children raised an alarm. Locals rushed to the spot and recovered the three bodies from the pit. Police arrived at the scene around 5:30 pm.
Kulaura Police Station Sub-Inspector Mostafizur Rahman said preliminary investigations suggest the three children drowned in the pit. Necessary legal steps will be taken.
